Diversity Task Force

The College of Education’s Diversity Task Force sponsors College-wide equity and diversity discussions. Aimed to stimulate community dialogue around issues of diversity and education, the Winter 2009 discussion is focused on The Possessive Investment in Whiteness: How White People Profit from Identity Politics by George Lipsitz.

Lipsitz’ book is the focus of an open seminar at the UW College of Education until mid-March every Fridays from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. in Miller 423A. Co-facilitated by Kathy Kimball, Diane Jones, Doris McEwen, and Isaac Gottsman, the seminar is open to all students, faculty, and staff.

As Kimball states, “We wanted to flatten the hierarchy, to engage with faculty, students, and staff in a forum where anyone can offer their responses to the work.”

Although some students are formally enrolled in the 2-credit seminar, all are welcome to join for one or all sessions. And, on March 13th, Lipstiz will join the group by phone for a robust dialogue about his work. Kimball explains that this is only one of the multi-layer educational approaches.

“The first layer is how adults engage in a book study,” asserts Kimball. “We are teaching strategies of engaging the text, including Socratic seminar, role-play simulation, study guides, personal experience, and conversation with the author. The second layer is the text itself, to which we each bring our own experience in a way that extends the text directly into our own lives.”

Drop in any Friday from January 16 to March 13, 2009, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.in Miller 423A.
