Partnerships & Opportunities

UW College of Education and Michigan State University — China Partnership 

Four doctoral students from the University of Washington, College of Education (Dean Hagin, Bret Norris, Kieran O’ Mahoney, and Kersti Tyson) traveled to China recently as part of a partnership activity, “Doctoral Fellowship for Enhancing Global Understanding” in collaboration with Michigan State University, the University of Delaware, Beijing University, and Southwestern China University. This new international partnership and others in the College add global dimensions and experiences to students’ work. The COE students who traveled to China have expressed the value this international experience has had on their educational perspectives and future research plans.

The COE students will reflect on their experiences at the first “Graduate International Education Colloquium” on Thursday, October 22, 2009 from 12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m. in Miller 104.  University students met in China who are visiting Michigan State University this quarter will join the presentation
via teleconference.

UW College of Education will send a second cohort of doctoral students to China in 2010 for the “Doctoral Fellowship for Global Enhancing Understanding” program.  Interested students must be at Prospective Candidacy or beyond.  Look for an announcement and application criteria on this IPP website! 

Forces and Forms of Change in Doctoral Education Worldwide

The Center for Innovation and Research in Graduate Education (CIRGE) is under the direction of Dr. Maresi Nerad, at the University of Washington Graduate School. She is also an Associate Professor of Higher Education in the UW College of Education. CIRGE has convened a series of workshops, “Forces and Forms of Change in Doctoral Education Worldwide.” Scholars, donors, and policy-makers in doctoral education from six continents and 21 countries have discussed the state of global graduate education worldwide. The 2009 workshop held in Kassel, Germany produced action-oriented recommendations to globally support doctoral education

UW College of Education - Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Partnership — Port Elizabeth, South Africa 

For the past seven years, University of Washington Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, Dr. Ed Taylor and College of Education faculty have collaborated with school leaders in Seattle and the University of Port Elizabeth in South Africa. See full size imageThe University’s name was changed to Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in January 2005, and the aims of the partnership continue to help each institution fulfill their educational mission and goals.

The partnership has expanded opportunities for a myriad of enriching educational experiences.  In February 2009, educators from the UW College of Education traveled to Port Elizabeth with Dr. Brad Portin, Director of University of Washington Bothell Education Program, for their field experience with the UW Seattle COE Leadership for Learning program course, Educational Leadership & Policy Studies 579, “Thinking Globally - Educating Locally.”

UW College of Education – Norway Teacher Exchange 

The student teaching exchange between the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway and the University of Washington Teacher Education Program in Seattle will soon begin its seventh year of promoting international understanding through cultural and academic learning. Jane Kinyon and Karen Mikolasy of the COE Teacher Education have coordinated the Norway teaching exchange for the University of Washington.

Each year, UW and NTNU select three secondary teacher education students to experience each other’s countries through student teaching. The exchange students learn from faculty and fellow students, and will teach their respective subjects in school settings completely different than they expected.

JET fellows 2008Jordan Education Trust Fellowship Exchange Project

 The Jordan Education Trust Fellowship Exchange Project, a teacher exchange program that cultivates global partnerships among educators in Seattle and Jordan was created with a gift from the Jordan Education Trust, established by Boeing executive Phil Condit and his wife, Geda Maso Condit ’77.
 
In 2007 and 2008, teachers from Jordan and Seattle participated in a three-week exchange through the new Jordan Education Trust Fellowship, which was overseen by Margaret Ann Bollmeier, Assistant Dean for Development and External Relations. Learn more about JET.

World Bank, E-Learning Support Program (ELSP)

This World Bank program is designed to assist Russia in re-orienting its educational system to the global information society. The program (in Russian known as the “Infornmatization of Education” project) does this through the development of new classroom ICT resources at several levels of complexity, improved preparation programs for teachers, and the creation of a network of several hundred regionally based ICT support centers. While most project work was completed in 2008, data analysis and further dissemination work continue. Dr. Kerr’s research also includes the reform and development of education in Russia and the former Soviet Union. The College of Education Investigator is Associate Dean Stephen T. Kerr.

UW College of Education and Zayed University Partnership

In October 2008, Dean Patricia Wasley and Dean Richard Schwab, the University of Connecticut met in Dubai, United Arab Emirates with President Dr. Sulaiman Al Jassim of Zayed University to sign a formal partnership agreement. The partnership between the two American colleges of education and Zayed’s College of Education established a collaborative relationship in which professors from UW and UConn teach on the Zayed campuses in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and provide research expertise when needed for selected projects. To initiate the partnership, Dean Wasley gave the graduation address for the first graduating class of Master’s students.

brad portin and students at zayed univ.Since 2008 UW faculty Beth West, Brad Portin, Doris McEwen Harris, and Allen Glenn have taught courses for Zayed.  Four graduate students from EDLPS accompanied Professor Portin in 2008.

Allen Glenn spent the spring semester, January – June 2009, on the Dubai Campus teaching, supervising two student teachers, and assisting with research proposals. Dean Peggy Blackwell and Assistant Dean Keith Bradshaw from Zayed have visited the UW campus.
