JET Fellowship

2008 University of Washington College of Education – Jordan Education Trust Fellowship

Overview

The UW, in partnership with the Jordan Education Trust, annually honors five distinguished K-12 teachers from Jordan and five distinguished alumni from the UW College of Education currently teaching in K-12 schools.

The selected K-12 will participate in a series of professional development activities at the University of Washington and in the Seattle area in the early part of each summer, followed byJET Logo further activities taking place in Amman Jordan in August. Both the Seattle and Amman portions of the program are residential for all Fellows.

The comparison of K-12 systems in Jordan and the US provides Fellows with a unique opportunity to reflect more deeply on the US educational system as a whole and their own K-12 setting in particular. The Fellowship will be a wonderful opportunity for professional renewal while Fellows work in close contact with other engaged educators.

Program Goals and Objectives

  • To further international and global understanding between teachers in Jordan and the United States.
  • To acknowledge distinguished K-12 teachers who have made an impact in the following areas:
    • Instructional effectiveness
    • Student achievement
    • Innovation and creativity
    • Parent and community involvement
    • Professional development
  • To provide an opportunity for educators from both countries to share effective pedagogy in the core content areas of mathematics, science, and literacy.

The Jordanian Education Trust (JET) was established to use education as a vehicle to build understanding between the people of Jordan and those of other countries. JET believes that nothing is more important to a country’s economic and social well being than education. Education provides the basis for a growing, creative, knowledge-based economy vital for success in the global economy. In addition, education provides a bridge to understanding between cultures. JET believes that the most critical element in education is the teacher. Without great teachers, great education is not possible.

Program Activities

The UW and Seattle area program include:

  • Residential visit to IslandWood Outdoor Learning Center on Bainbridge Island;
  • Training in the learning sciences presented by UW’s LIFE (Learning in Informal and Formal Environments) Center; and
  • Training provided by Pacific Science Center, Seattle Aquarium, Seattle Art Museum, Museum of Flight and the Burke Museum.

College of Education faculty will facilitate participants translating these learning opportunities to classroom application.

The Jordanian program will be similar to that offered by UW. All participants will be asked to write a report of the fellowship experience.

Funding

The program is fully funded by the Jordan Education Trust and the University of Washington College of Education.

UW Fellows must obtain a valid passport at their own expense. Program staff will work with the Fellows to obtain needed visas and any visa costs will be covered. All expenses in Jordan, including meals, lodging, and activity fees will be paid.
