LinkedIn is a social networking site for professional development. It all starts with your real connections – colleagues, friends, and family – and allows you to build up your network. The UW College of Education LinkedIn group and sub-groups, provide our community with opportunities to connect with peers, network with alums, find jobs, and post career opportunities, among other options. As a user, you completely control your own privacy settings, information, and communications.
Now, more than ever, it’s important to provide our students and alums with professional development opportunities. As career services and alumni networking increasingly go online and social networking competes with email, its helpful for our students and alums to have easy access for professional connections, advice, and opportunities.
On the College of Education group, we encourage community members and alums to post jobs, ask questions, share news, and engage in discussions. Its easy to join, just create a profile and join our group! You can learn more about being a new user or about general LinkedIn information.

Create a profile by creating an account at LinkedIn. This helps you to build a professional online presence. Remember, LinkedIn is different from other social networking sites, like Facebook or MySpace. Promote a professional image that you would be comfortable sharing with a parent, a teacher, or a future boss. From including a professional photo of you individually to writing a header that names your ideal career, the little details make this LinkedIn entry a professional tool for your career advancement.
Fill out your profile. Be sure to include:
Job titles and places of employment. Be sure to include internships.
Connections to previous employers, which will allow you to build your network quickly.
Specialties and skills. This is particularly important since many employers and peers search by keyword, not by name.
Groups and Associations, which allows you to interact with professionals and get help with career advancement.
Recommendations, which shows potential employers that you’ve got a strong background built on respect and hard-work. You can get these from professors, previous employers, co-workers, etc.
Modify your settings according to your preference. This means that you control your displayed information, communication frequency, etc.
Reach out to all available resources. Anyone and everyone is a potential job connection. These may include: career center staff, teachers/professors, friends, former bosses, co-workers, internship supervisors, volunteer organizations, professional associations, or alumnus or your institution.
Connect meaningfully with alums or mentors. This is a place to approach other professionals for career advice or professional guidance. Make sure to use proper grammar and to respond in a timely way. Carefully craft your communications for your audience, be it an alum of your institution or a prospective supervisor.
Research companies or career paths. Visit their pages on LinkedIn to learn about their mission, open positions, related companies, and network statistics. You can see if you of your connections might introduce you to someone in their company or that career path.
Post jobs or resumes to the UW College of Education LinkedIn page. It’s the best place to connect with education-related peers and employers.
