Allison Kang

allison kangMy educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Masters in Public Health Genetics. I am currently a doctoral student in Curriculum and Instruction focusing on Science Education. My current work with John Frederiksen as my advisor is on a research project entitled "The Laboratory Experience of Undergraduates in Genomic Science: The Mentor-Student Relationship for Underrepresented Minority Students". My desire is to make an impact on the current trend of underrepresented women and minorities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. I hope that my work will help open the door for more women and students of color to pursue graduate degrees in the STEM areas, eventually allowing for more diversity in science.

In addition to being a graduate student in the C&I Science education program, I am a full-time 6th and 7th grade science teacher in Seattle. My research focuses on the way students implement constructive feedback from their peers. Specifically, I am focusing on feedback given to students about the experiments they have designed and their interpretation of the data they have obtained. My advisor is John Fredricksen.

Marie Wright

marie wrightI’m enrolled in the Science Education M.Ed. program. I’m finishing up a 10-month residency at IslandWood on Bainbridge Island and will be moving to Seattle this summer to begin the final year of my Masters program. I am interested in many different subjects, but I would like to learn a lot more about birds in the upcoming year. I’ve had great time learning about science at IslandWood and I’m looking forward to taking classes at the UW. I am interested in a career as an Education Ranger for a parks department when I finish my Master’s degree. My focus is on Environmental Education for the general public.
