Curriculum and Instruction Study Options

The College of Education offers three degree options within the area of Curriculum and Instruction: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), and Master of Education (M.Ed).

Note: Starting in the 2009-10 Academic Year, doctoral study in the Educational Communication and Technology pathway will be increasingly merged with doctoral study in the Learning Sciences Program. Doctoral applicants will no longer be admitted to doctoral study in Educational Communication and Technology. Doctoral applicants are encouraged to apply via the Learning Sciences. Applications for the MEd in Educational Communication and Technology will continue to be accepted for the 2009-10 academic year.

phdThe College of Education Ph.D. Program prepares students for careers of research or scholarly inquiry and teaching at the college level. The program consists of (1) continuous research or inquiry, (2) courses in Education and related fields designed to develop a comprehensive academic basis for future work in research and teaching, and (3) teaching and other related experiences tailored to individual needs and career goals.

doctor of education The Doctor of Education (Ed. D.) is designed to prepare students for advanced professional practice directed mainly toward the application or transmission of existing knowledge. The program of study leading to the Doctor of Education, as a professional degree, focuses on the utilization of research knowledge, rather than on the production of new research knowledge. Those who aspire to leadership positions as administrators, policy analysts, curriculum designers, or learning resource specialists, for example, would appropriately seek the Doctor of Education degree.

mastersThe Masters of Education program is an invitation to grapple with essential questions of curriculum and instruction. It is an invitation to reconsider and revise these questions continually, to confront one's inevitable ignorance, and to build new understandings and new questions. In short, the mission of the M. Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction is to cultivate knowledgeable and reflective practitioners.

The Masters of Education in Instructional Leadership is offered jointly by the areas of Curriculum & Instruction and Educational Leadership & Policy Studies.The MIL degree concentration expands leadership knowledge and skills for experienced teachers, instructional coaches, mentor teachers, cooperating teachers and professional development leaders.
