This study option is designed to prepare teachers and other professionals to assume leadership roles in school districts, colleges, universities and other institutions that have projects, courses and programs related to multicultural education, race relations, and to improving the academic achievement of students of color. It is designed to help classroom teachers acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to integrate their curricula with ethnic content and for educators who wish to respond to the challenges and opportunities of the growing racial, ethnic, cultural, and language diversity in their school districts.
In brief, the M.Ed. in C&I requires 48 credits:
All course choices are to be negotiated with advisors. Advisors have the discretion to recommend or require certain courses depending on the student’s background. The courses listed below are suggestions only.
This document describes below what is required in the Multicultural Education area of specialization and guides for selecting courses in a supporting area of study. Students should carefully review the Core Requirements for details about all four components of the M.Ed. course of study. Students must also follow the general requirements of the graduate school; among these are that a course of study should include at least 18 credits at the 500-level or above and 18 graded credits.
Coursework in Multicultural Education (18)
Eighteen (18) credits in multicultural education courses offered by the Area of Curriculum and Instruction and other divisions within the College of Education. At least twelve (12) of these credits should be Curriculum and Instruction (EDC&I) designated courses. Three (3) of these credits may also be used to satisfy the Foundations of Education requirements. These requirements should be selected from the following options:

Considerations
Ethnic Diversity Outside the College of Education (12 Credits)
Twelve (12) credit hours in ethnic diversity subject matter fields outside of the College of
Education. Courses can be taken from those offered by various departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. This requirement can be satisfied in several different ways with the consent of the advisor. For example, all 12 credits may be taken on one ethnic group such as African Americans or Latino Americans. Secondly, the student may distribute the courses among several different ethnic groups, such as Native Americans, Latino Americans, and Asian Americans. Thirdly, the student may combine courses that deal with issues of race and ethnicity in general with courses that focus on specific ethnic groups.
