Cross-Disciplinary Studies

The field of education is charged with the ambitious task of generating new knowledge to deepen our understanding and capacity to address the challenges facing teachers, students, and leaders across a variety of contexts. To truly understand the multiple ways that education shapes the lives of youth requires multiple perspectives. Consequently, the field of education is cross-disciplinary by nature drawing on insights from the fields of psychology, linguistics, sociology, anthropology, organizational theory, psychometrics, and education. Our programs directly capitalize on the strength that multiple perspectives afford. To that end, we offer:

Ph.D. Programs

All Ph.D. programs in the College of Education are cross-disciplinary. Students work with advisors to develop individualized courses of study that draw on coursework across the College of Education and University of Washington. Ph.D. programs are offered by Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Psychology, Educational Leadership & Policy Studies, and Special Education.

Learning Sciences

Learning Sciences is a new graduate concentration (M.Ed./Ph.D.) that focuses on the nature of learning, knowing, and understanding in a variety of settings from schools to workplaces, museums toElementary students raising hands computer-based environments as well as other informal and non-traditional educational settings. Danforth Educational Leadership Program

The Danforth Educational Program at the University of Washington prepares experienced teachers to become K-12 Principals and Program Administrators. The Danforth Program is a one-year, intensive program that includes a half-time internship and a rigorous academic program linking Theory and Practice. Details»

Elementary Special Education/Teacher Preparation Program

A Masters in Teaching focusing on Elementary Special Education is offered by the Teacher Education program for those interested in teaching elementary classroom students with disabilities. Details»

Leadership for Learning Program (L4L)

The Leadership for Learning Program (L4L) at the University of Washington is designed for educators who exercise leadership in K-12 districts. The L4L prepares experienced educators to become K-12 Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, and District Leaders in administration, business or finance, curriculum, special programs, staff development, and human resources. The L4L is a three year, part-time program designed to accommodate the constraints of working professionals. After successful completion of the program, students earn their Ed.D. and are qualified to apply for a Washington State Initial Superintendent Certificate. Details»

Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership

As college and university athletic departments have grown into big businesses, administrators within these departments are increasingly expected to possess the core business competencies necessary to run a complex organization. To prepare you to meet these demands, the University of Washington will offer a Master of Education in Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership (IAL) beginning in Summer 2006.

Taught by UW faculty from the College of Education and the School of Business, as well as senior leaders in professional and intercollegiate athletics (Divisions I, II and III), this graduate program prepares you to assume various leadership positions within intercollegiate athletics. The curriculum balances the need for developing competencies in financial skills, strategic planning, evaluation, development and leadership. It also advances your knowledge of how athletics is uniquely situated within intercollegiate settings and the positive impact it has on student athletes. Details»

Master of Education in Instructional Leadership

The Master of Education in Instructional Leadership (MIL) is offered jointly by the areas of Curriculum & Instruction and Educational Leadership & Policy Studies.The MIL degree concentration expands leadership knowledge and skills for experienced teachers, instructional coaches, mentor teachers, cooperating teachers and professional development leaders. You may not necessarily intend to become a school administrator; instead you may want to build your skills for working with teachers, understanding educational organizations, developing practical inquiry skills, and deepening your knowledge in a content focus area.
