Education Publications Curriculum Vitae

James Soto Antony is Associate Professor of Educational Leadership & Policy, Adjunct Associate Professor in Sociology, and Director of the Graduate Program in Higher Education. Dr. Antony also serves as the founding Executive Director of the Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership program, serves on the Faculty Board for the Department of Comparative History of Ideas, and is an affiliate of the Center for Multicultural Education.

Dr. Antony's research is focused in three areas: (1) the professional development and achievement of higher education students, faculty, and staff members, and (2) the development and use of large-scale relational and longitudinal data sets and evaluation systems for the improvement of higher education, and (3) issues pertaining to intercollegiate athletic leadership. His teaching focuses on broader issues relevant to the training of forward-thinking leaders in higher education. Specifically, he teaches courses on data-driven decision-making, accountability and assessment, organizational and leadership development, student development theory and practice, and quantitative methodological approaches in higher education assessment and evaluation.

Professor Antony received his baccalaureate degree in Psychology and his Master's degree and Ph.D. in Higher Education and Organizational Change from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has held prior leadership roles at the University of Washington, within the Vice Provost's Office for Minority Affairs, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, the Faculty Senate, and the College of Education.

Dr. Antony currently is a Fellow of the American Council on Education. As a Fellow, he is working at Yale University on the development of a large-scale assessment and evaluation system aimed at improving Yale undergraduate education. He also currently serves on the editorial boards or is a reviewer for several scholarly journals, including the Journal of Higher Education, Research in Higher Education, Review of Higher Education, Urban Review, the American Educational Research Journal, and the Association for the Study of Higher Education Reader Series. He is the author of five books on higher education, and has published over 25 articles and chapters pertaining to higher education. He has been appointed to many national advisory boards and has also served as a research and evaluation consultant to numerous colleges and universities, several government-supported grant projects, and large-scale educational projects within the private sector.
