Education Publications Curriculum Vitae

Leadership makes an important difference in the quality of education provided to all children in our public schools. The needs of children and families who have been historically underserved in our society concern me greatly. Therefore, I dedicate my work as Director of K-12 Leadership Programs to a range of activities connected to the development and sustenance of aspiring leaders who do the courageous work in our public schools. I enjoy teaching, facilitating reflective seminars, and learning with my students about the changing nature and culture of schools and school systems. Working in collaboration with colleagues from the UW faculty and the field, I collaborate in the development and continuous refinement of the curriculum, pedagogy, and structures in our leadership programs. By engaging in partnerships with local school districts, OSPI, other state agencies, and a range of community groups, I stay connected with the reality of schooling and the interdependence between school systems, the environment, government, community, and business.

Currently, I am learning about instructional leadership at the school and district level so as to revise and improve our programs in line with best practices and research. In addition, I believe that education systems and leaders have an essential role in environmental and social justice and I am preparing to teach a course on this topic in 2007 and blend these ideas into the curriculum.

Extensive experience in school and district leadership roles grounds my work. I have served as principal, special education director, and assistant superintendent in the K-12 system in several states including Maine, Alaska, Utah, and Nebraska. I also served as Assistant Executive Director for the Washington State Commission on Student Learning (1993-99). My research includes program evaluation, special education policy, innovative work in the development and administration of leadership programs, and issues related to school reform.
