Soder is Research Professor of Education in Educational Leadership and
Policy Studies. He is the author of The Language of Leadership; editor
of Democracy, Education and the Schools, and co-editor of The Moral
Dimensions of Teaching
; Places Where Teachers Are Taught; Developing
Democratic Character in the Young
; and Education and the Making of a
Democratic People
. Soder’s research and teaching interests continue to
focus on the ethics and politics of rhetoric, education, and democracy;
the role of schools in a democracy; the role of the university in a free
society; informal education and popular culture; and the culture of
leadership succession. Prior to joining with John Goodlad and Kenneth
Sirotnik in creating the Center for Educational Renewal in 1985, Soder
was special assistant to the dean of the College of Education,
University of Washington, acting as liaison between the College and the
Seattle School District on the joint Effective Schools Project. Prior to
his work at the university, Soder was an administrator in the Cape
Flattery School District on the Makah Indian Reservation at Neah Bay,
Washington, and was education director of the Seattle Urban League.
