The main focus of my research is the prevention of the early reading problems in children that often lead to the development of reading disabilities. I work on this through examination of effective assessment and instructional methods for prevention and remediation of reading problems in primary-aged children. I am particularly interested in reading fluency, and work to determine what skills and knowledge are important for development into an excellent reader and how one may better teach those skills to children. A final area of interest is understanding how pre-service and in-service teachers change in their understanding of teaching and learning as a result of coursework, field experiences, and professional development.
