Special Education

Do you want to be a special education teacher?

If you want to earn your initial certification in special education The University of Washington offers four different speciality programs:

Are you already a certified teacher and want to earn a Master's Degree?Faculty

If you already have certification in special education you can usually complete a M.Ed. in one year. You can apply to the general special education program or to the specialty area that is most in line with your interests:

Are you interested in applied behavior analysis and becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst?

We offer a specialty track of the General Master's Degree in special education that is approved by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board. Students can complete this and take the approved practicum and qualify to take the BCBA exam. Students completing this option will be required to pay a supervision fee in addition to tuition. This fee pays for a BCBA to supervise the practicum. Students completing the General Master's Degree in special education DO NOT earn a teaching certification. If you are interested in becoming a BCBA and earning a teaching certificate, please apply to either the early childhood special education or severe disabilities program. For more information please see the BCBA study options.

Do you already have a Master's degree and are you interested in earning a Doctorate in Special Education to pursue research, university teaching, or administration?

We offer a Ph.D. and Ed.D. program. Prospective students should contact the faculty member who have research and teaching interests that are the closest match to your intended areas of study.
