EDPSY 501 Human Learning & Educational Practice (3)

Systematic examination of current research about human learning in educational settings, including the study of behavioral, information processing, social construction, and the developmental perspectives on learning. (Herrenkohl, McCutchen, Stevens)

EDPSY 502 Developmental Foundations of Early Learning (3)

Perceptual-motor, language & overall cognitive development in children from birth through primary-school age. Emphasis on Piagetian and Vygotskian approaches to development with a special focus on the connections between learning and development. Field-based course projects may be required. (McCutchen & Herrenkohl)

EDPSY 506 Instructional Theory (3)

Sources, current state & utility of prescriptive instruction theories with emphasis upon theories having a potential for guiding the design of instruction. (Bell)

EDPSY 510 Cognition in the Context of the School Curriculum (3)

Contemporary issues and trends in human learning, with a focus on reasoning within subject-matter areas such as mathematics, history, and science. (McCutchen, Bell)

EDPSY 518 Assessment & Diagnosis of Reading Disabilities (3)

Techniques for individual assessment of students with reading difficulties (K-12) including formal assessment using standard assessment tools and informal diagnostic teaching. Appropriate for classroom teachers, reading specialists, and school psychologists. Includes conducting and analyzing case studies. (McCutchen)

EDPSY 520 Psychology of Reading (3)

Reviews current empirical research on cognitive processes in reading, including word and sub-word processes, syntax and comprehension, reading and perception, word recognition, concept development and meaning in reading, psychology of reading interests and skills. (McCutchen)

EDPSY 521 Psychology of Writing (3)

Examines writing as a cognitive process & reviews current empirical research on writing, emphasizing primarily studies from a psychological perspective. Explores both the developmental differences & individual differences in writing skills, together with instructional implications. (McCutchen)

EDPSY 577 Neuropsychology of School Learning & Behavioral Problems (5)

The microstructure, macrostructure, & structural & functional development of the brain are reviewed with a focus on the educational relevance of developmental neuropsychology. We read & critique articles in four areas: hemispheric differences & integration; neurological soft signs; attention deficit & hyperactivity; language, reading & learning disabilities; & medical syndromes. (Berninger)

EDPSY 582 Seminar in Development & Socialization (3, max. 15)

Advanced seminar on selected topics concerned with human development & socialization processes. Emphasis placed upon empirical research & its theoretical underpinnings in such areas as cognitive development, moral development & education, self-concept development & related concerns. (Herrenkohl)

EDPSY 583 Seminar in Learning & Thinking: Cognition in Contexts (3, max. 15)

Special seminar in approaches to studying cognition in naturalistic settings, including schools, workplaces, and homes. Course draws upon various research traditions including cognitive science, applied linguistics, qualitative sociology and anthropology. (Stevens)

EDPSY 586-7 Qualitative Methods of Educational Research (3 & 3)

Survey of various qualitative research methods from a variety of disciplinary perspectives (anthropology, cognitive psychology, policy analysis & evaluation) with intensive experience in collection, analysis & reporting of data. (Stevens)
