Courses which are normally part of the program for an emphasis in Measurement, Statistics and Research Design represent a broad understanding of the theoretical approaches, concepts and methods involved in the quantitative areas, as well as background studies in human development and learning.
Specific program planning is designed by the candidate and the supervisory committee, and therefore no one standard program applies to all students.
Examples of courses in Educational Psychology which might be included in the student’s program include:
| EDPSY 501 | Human Learning and Educational Practice | 3 |
| EDPSY 502 | Developmental Foundations of Early Learning | 3 |
| EDPSY 503 | Theories of Intelligence | 3 |
| EDPSY 506 | Instructional Theory | 3 |
| EDPSY 509 | Educational Issues in Human Development | 5 |
| EDPSY 510 | Educational Issues in Human Learning | 3 |
| EDPSY 520 | Psychology of Reading | 3 |
| EDPSY 521 | Psychology of Writing | 3 |
| EDPSY 525 | Creativity and Education | 3 |
| EDPSY 531 | Socialization of School-Age Children | 3 |
| EDPSY 532 | Adolescence & Youth | 3 |

Courses within Education but outside Educational Psychology might include:
| EDC &I 532 | Seminar in Research in Reading | 3 |
| EDC & I 555 | Educational Futures | 3 |
| EDC & I 588 | Seminar: Computers in Education | 3 |
Courses pertinent to the quantitative area are found in a number of different areas. Courses specifically devoted to research design and statistics are found in the next section on methods of scholarly research. Courses related to measurement in other departments include:
| PSYCH 446 | Objective Assessment of Personality | 3 |
| PSYCH 516 | Educational and Psychological Measurement | 3 |
| PSYCH 525 | Assessment of Intelligence | 5 |
| PSYCH 526 | Psychological Assessment of Children | 5 |
| SOC 427 | Statistical Classification & Measurement | 3 |
| SOC 527 | Measurement of Basic Sociological Concepts | 3 |
| SOC 529 | Multiple Indicators in Social Measurement | 3 |
In addition, courses in the areas of human learning and development are available in various departments at the University.
In order to acquire a working knowledge of diverse methods of educational inquiry, Ph.D. students are required to take the following sequential courses early in their programs:
| EDLPS 525 | Educational Inquiry: Introduction to Methods | 3 (offered Autumn Quarter) |
| EDLPS 526 | Educational Inquiry: Explication of Methods | 1 (offered Wtr prereq EDLPS 525) |
| EDLPS 527 | Educational Inquiry: Methodological Issues | 2 (offered Spr prereq EDLPS 526) |
An additional six credits of research course work is required of all Ph.D. students in Education. As a student in the Measurement, Statistics, and Research Design specialty you will obviously exceed this minimum requirement. The Department is committed to providing students with a breadth of research tools. Therefore, a student is expected to select research methods course work that presents at least two substantially different approaches. Below are some of the courses in Education and other departments which might be included in your program.
| EDPSY 586-87 | Qualitative Methods of Educational Research | 3-3 |
| EDPSY 588 | Survey Research Methodology & Theory | 3 |
| EDPSY 593 | Experimental Design & Analysis | 5 |
| EDPSY 594 | Advanced Correlational Techniques | 5 |
| EDSPE 510 | Behavioral Measurement & Management in the Classroom | 3 |
| EDLPS 535 | Seminar: Research in History of Education | 3 |
| EDLPS 524 | Seminar in Philosophy of Education: Modes of Inquiry | 3 |
| EDC & I 597 | Curriculum Evaluation Seminar | 3 |
As a student in Educational Psychology, additional research competence is strongly recommended. Courses which may prove valuable to your program include:
| QMETH 520 | Statistical Applications of Linear Models | 4 |
| EDSPE 517 | Practicum in Research Design & Analysis in Special Education | 3 |
| PSYCH 514 | Linear Models and Data Analysis | 4 |
| PSYCH 515 | Modeling Experimental and Observational Data | 4 |
