1. A written/typed personal goal statement which addresses:
a. reasons for seeking entry into this program;
b. chronological vita of your education, including degrees received;
c. postbaccalaureate experiences in teaching, counseling & assessment if any;
d. your professional aspirations; and
e. your research interests.
2. Three recent letters of recommendation from professors or first-line supervisors, on their letterhead, which address:
a. your communication skills, both written and oral;
b. your ability to interact productively with supervisors, peers and children;
c. your ability to function without supervision;
d. your teaching, counseling and/or assessment skills; and
e. other relevant aspects of your academic or professional development.
f. your research competence and experience.
3. Graduate Record Examination:
a. Minimum score required for entry into the doctoral program is 1200 (verbal and quantitative combined), with neither the Verbal or Quantitative scores less than the 50th percentile.
b. If your GRE scores do not meet the above criteria, please provide a written justification for why your scores do not accurately reflect your ability.
4. Grade-point average for latest 90 graded quarter credits (or 60 semester credits)
a. Minimum required for admission is 3.5.
b. Emphasis is placed on psychology and educational psychology grades.
5. An undergraduate degree in Psychology will be considered for direct admission to the Ph.D. program. Previous research experience along with experience in applied settings is highly recommended.
6. A masters degree in School Psychology (or completion of all requirements for the masters at the University of Washington except the internship which must then be done the first year of the doctoral program) or certification as a school psychologist. Applicants not meeting this requirement must first complete preparatory course work in school psychology and the internship.
7. Preferential considerations is given to applicants who have had employment or volunteer experiences in the schools, Pre-K-12.
8. Preferential consideration is given to applicants who have had research training and experience.
9. A personal or phone interview with one or more members of the core faculty in school psychology is required, and will only be arranged for applicants who remain competitive following review of the above documentation.
10. Applications for admission will be considered only for admission in Autumn Quarter. Applications must be received by the Graduate School by December 1; faculty reviews will commence in January and continue until all vacancies are filled.

Area of Specialization in School Psychology. Unless specified otherwise, at least one course totaling at least 5 credits must be taken from each of the following fields of study. However, if one of these fields is selected as a supportive cognate (see below), courses from that field must not be included in the area of specialization. (Courses listed in each field, following, are representative options.)

Six credits in social bases of behavior must have been completed during the master's plus certification program or must be taken in addition to the above in the doctoral program. In addition, students are strongly encouraged to take an advanced course in social psychology.

21 credits in intellectual, behavioral and academic assessment must have been completed as part of the masters plus certification program or must be taken in addition to the above in the doctoral program.

Intervention
12 credits of counseling and behavioral interventions must have been completed as part of the masters plus certification program or must be taken in addition to the above in the doctoral progam.
Advanced Practicum (6 credits)
Students must take 6 hours of an advanced practicum that is individually designed by the advisor and the student to fulfill doctoral level expertise in assessment, consultation, and intervention in the area of specification that is appropriate for the student. EDPSY 578 may count as an advanced practicum. Advanced practica must be approved by faculty advisor.
Cognates
Each doctoral student is required to select two supportive cognate fields. One of these cognatres can be chosen within the same broad area as your specialization; however one must be outside the broad area of your specialization. Students may wish to choose both cognates outside of their specialization field which is perfectly acceptable. Depending upon your academic background, the range of credits required for each supportive cognate is between 3 and 15. The breadth and depth of each cognate is normally defined by the graduate faculty member selected to represent the cognate area. (Courses from a field of study that are utilized to fulfill the supportive cognate requirements must not be included in the area of specialization).
Specialization outside of the College of Education
The College requires that a specialization from a department other than Education be identified. This is defined as the intellectual content of a department outside Education. The specialization outside the College will normally be in a single department (e.g., History). In exceptional cases, it may be a series of courses from different departments containing a common thread (e.g., Ethnic Studies, which may draw upon courses based in several departments). The breadth and depth of the specialization outside the College is normally defined by the graduate faculty representative from that specialization serving on your Supervisory Committee.
Dissertation

Internship (On Leave status)
In accord with APA requirements and with accepted clinical guidelines, students are required to complete an internship experience following completion of both the written and oral general examinations. The internships must consist of at least 1500 hours completed with a 24 month period and must be under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. If the dissertation has not been defended before internship, continued work on the dissertation also may be pursued and is recommended. To qualify for licensure more than one licensed psychologist must be at the site which has a formal program of supervised internship activity. Faculty strongly encourage students to apply to APA-approved predoctoral internships.
Annual Student Evaluations required by the APA
Students are assessed by the core faculty in School Psychology on an annual basis to discuss their progress in the School Psychology progra. Issues of timely progress and professional development in general are the primary focus of these reviews.
Training Model: Scientist-Practitioner
The APA Committee on Accreditation (750 First St, NE, Washington, DC 20002; phone (202) 336-5500) monitors compliance with APA standards.

Residency Requirements
Effective March 2000 there is no minimum full-time registration requirement for the doctoral program.
