Master in Teaching Application Timeline
Before you apply…
The following must be completed before applying to the MIT program.
- Complete 60 hours and turn in Evaluation of Educational Experience form
- Complete the West-B exam. You must pass the Reading, Writing, and Math sections.
- Complete and pass the WEST-E exam in your specific subject area/s.
- Elementary – have your prerequisites checked and approved using the Elementary Master in Teaching Prerequisite Evaluation sheet.
- Secondary – Visit your department advisor and have them fill out the Primary/Supporting endorsement form or submit it online.
- Maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average
- Prepare a resume detailing experience with youth, work experience, education, etc.
- Write a one page goal statement detailing your interest in the MIT program.
When you apply
Your online application must be submitted and all paper materials turned in (not postmarked) by the application deadline.

A complete application includes:
- Copy of the Graduate School application
- Copy of the Supplemental MIT Application (part of the online process)
- Printed copy of resume
- Printed copy of goal statement
- 2 letters of recommendation – Should be from 2 people who can attest to your academic background or work history. Must be separate from your 60 hour experience. May be submitted online when you begin your COE application.
- Evaluation of Educational Experience form
- Official Transcripts from all schools attended
- Character and Fitness form
- West-B scores sent to the UW
- WEST-E scores sent to the UW
- Elementary only: Prerequisite check sheet
- Secondary only: Endorsement evaluation
If you are a finalist for admission to the program, you will be invited to
- Attend an orientation session
- Attend an interview, which will include:
- Group and individual interviews with a panel of 3-4 faculty and students
- Production of a writing sample
Before you begin the program…
If you are admitted to the MIT program, this is what you must have completed before the program begins.
- Bachelor’s degree conferred
- Writing composition course completed
- Education of an ethnic group course completed
- Elementary only: All prerequisites completed
- Secondary only: All but one endorsement courses completed
