An endorsement refers to the specific subject matter you are qualified to teach in Washington State. Students in the Elementary MIT program earn an Elementary Education endorsement which focuses on grades K-8; students in the Secondary MIT program earn a subject-specific endorsement that covers grades 7-12.
Along with earning an Elementary Education endorsement, students will also take some coursework that partially meets content requirements for Special Education and English as a Second Language (ESL). If you are interested in learning more about a Special Education endorsement click here. If you would like to add a subject specific endorsement, please refer to the Secondary endorsement information below.
Applicants need to have their transcripts evaluated to ensure that they have met UW content knowledge requirements in the endorsement(s) they are interested in earning. A minimum of 2.0 is required for each course used toward an endorsement unless set higher by the department. You’ll find a list of required courses for each endorsement here. Please contact the appropriate UW academic departments to arrange for your evaluation. When visiting with an adviser, please bring the Endorsement Evaluation form, a complete set of transcripts and course descriptions/syllabi.
In addition to completing endorsement coursework, you must also pass the WEST-E Exam in your endorsement area(s) by the application deadline. Click here to learn which test you should register for.
Applicants are required to have one endorsement that is taught full-time or a combination of endorsements that provide for full-time student teaching. The availability of student teaching is dependent upon participating schools and student's subject area combination. See below for a list of approved endorsements through the UW, full-time availability and details on adding endorsements with limited student teaching availability.
The endorsements listed below are available full time or, in conjunction with another subject, will provide the required full time student teaching experience. Be sure to contact the appropriate academic department for an evaluation and if you have any questions on endorsement coursework.
