Endorsement Pathways for Certified Teachers

As a certified teacher you have three pathways available for adding additional endorsements to your certificate.  The pathway you take depends on what you are currently endorsed in, your teaching experience and what subject you wish to add. Please click here for the Pathway Chart to find out the appropriate route for you.

Pathway 1

Pathway 1 allows you to add an endorsement that is similar in instructional methodology to your current endorsement.  This is a test only option and does not require additional coursework.  To qualify for Pathway 1 you must:

  1. Hold an endorsement that is compatible to the one you wish to add
  2. Have taught at least 90 days in your current endorsement area identified as a Pathway 1 option
  3. Passing the WEST-E exam for the endorsement you wish to add

Teachers who are eligible to add an endorsement via Pathway 1 may download the endorsement application from OSPI and submit it directly to the appropriate ESD:

Pathway 2

Pathway 2 allows you to add an endorsement that is compatible in instructional methodology to your current endorsement.  It requires working with a university/college that can provide supervision and performance assessment as part of this pathway.  To qualify for Pathway 2 you must:

  1. Hold an endorsement that is compatible to the one you wish to add
  2. Have taught at least 90 days in your current endorsement area identified as a Pathway 2 option
  3. Passing the WEST-E exam for the endorsement you wish to add
  4. Successfully complete a Performance-Based Pedagogy Assessment

For an application to the University of Washington’s Pathway 2 endorsement program, contact Cathrine Kattula at (206) 685-6421 or ckattula@pce.uw.edu.

Pathway 3

Pathway 3 gives you the option of adding an endorsement that is neither compatible nor similar in instructional methodology or content to you current subject.  In order to add an endorsement via Pathway 3 you must complete an approved university/college program in the subject you wish to add.  The UW’s Pathway 3 program consists of:

  1. Completing required content-knowledge coursework
  2. A methods course in the new endorsement subject
  3. Completing a practicum experience in the new endorsement subject
  4. Passing the WEST-E exam for the endorsement you wish to add
  5. Successful completion of the Performance-Based Pedagogy Assessment.

Click here for more information on adding an endorsement via Pathway 3.
