Pathway 3 Endorsement

The state approved endorsement programs at the University of Washington cover a wide range of subjects and ensure that you meet all requirements in content knowledge, methodology and practicum experience.  Please refer to the MIT endorsement page for a complete list of endorsements available through the UW.

1. Apply for Pathway 3

Complete the Pathway 3 application and return it the Office of Student Services along with a copy of your valid teaching certificate and official transcripts from colleges/universities where endorsement coursework was completed.

2. Endorsement Evaluation

Candidates must have their transcripts evaluated by the appropriate UW academic adviser to ensure they have met content knowledge requirements in the endorsement(s) they wish to add.

  • A minimum of 2.0 is required for each course unless set higher by the department
  • Check the list of required courses for each endorsement
  • Contact an advisor in your area of interest for specific evaluation procedures.
  • Be sure to provide the adviser with the Endorsement Evaluation form along with a complete set of transcripts and course descriptions/syllabi.

3. WEST-E

You must pass the state’s required endorsement test in each subject area you wish to add to your certificate. Click here for testing information and on-line registration. Be sure to have a score report sent to UW, Seattle.

4. Methodology

Certificated teachers are required to complete related methods coursework in the desired endorsement area. Methods classes are generally offered through the College of Education’s Curriculum & Instruction department. Appropriate methods courses are not always available every quarter; check with Michael Nielsen, Certification Officer, for current offerings (mnielsen@u.washington.edu).  Any substitutions must be approved by the Director of Teacher Education.

5. Practicum

The UW requires 100 hours of field work in order to demonstrate competency in the new endorsement area. The practicum must include a combination of observing, planning, teaching, and assessment.  Candidates will be placed with a mentor teacher in a UW partner school; should such a placement be unavailable candidates may arrange for their own placement.  The practicum must be approved by the Director of Teacher Education before the candidate begins work.  Previous experience may not count.  Credit for the practicum is earned by registering for EDUC 502.  An entry code will be provided upon approval of practicum placement.

6. Adding the Endorsement

When all endorsement requirements have been met you will complete additional OSPI paperwork including a $15 fee to add the endorsement. You will then be recommend to OSPI for the new endorsement.
