Pathway 3 Endorsement

The state approved endorsement programs at UW, Seattle cover a wide range of subjects ensuring that you meet all requirements in content knowledge, methodology and practicum experience.  Please refer to the MIT endorsement page for a complete list of endorsements available through the UW.

Once you’ve decided on the endorsement you wish to add, the following steps will help guide you through the UW system and help us track your successful progress.  We suggest following the requirements in the order listed.

1. Apply for Pathway 3

Contact Michael Nielsen, Certification Officer, for a Pathway 3 endorsement application (mnielsen@u.washington.edu).  This will allow us to track your progress and keep you up to date on requirements.  You will need to submit a copy of your valid teaching certificate along with official transcripts from colleges/universities where endorsement coursework was completed.

2. Endorsement Evaluation

In order to know where you are with UW endorsement coursework requirements, you must have your transcripts evaluated by the appropriate academic department. Contact an advisor in your area of interest to find out their specific procedures for an endorsement evaluation.  Be sure to provide transcripts (some departments will require official copies) as well as a copy of the endorsement evaluation form

3. WEST-E

You will need to pass the state’s required endorsement test in each subject area you wish to add to your certificate. Click here for information on which test you should take and for on-line registration. Be sure to have a score report sent to UW, Seattle.

4. Methodology

Methods classes are generally offered through the College of Education’s Curriculum & Instruction department. Appropriate methods courses are not always available every quarter; check with Michael Nielsen, Certification Officer, for current offerings (mnielsen@u.washington.edu).

5. Practicum

Building on your content knowledge, successful methods class and Praxis scores, the practicum experience allows you to put all of these elements into practice. You will need to arrange your own placement with a qualified teacher contingent on College of Education approval.  Once approved you will register for a 2 credit class (EDUC 502, Practicum) and will be required to spend 17-25 hours in the classroom.  Evaluation of the practicum is based on the goals and targets established for the UW MIT program and will consist of the Performance-Based Pedagogy Assessment, classroom observations, and a written evaluation from the supervising teacher.

Practicum forms, entry codes and information on registering for EDUC 502 will be provided to you when you are ready for this final step in your endorsement program.

6. Adding the Endorsement

Once all requirements have been met you will complete additional OSPI paperwork and pay a $15 fee per endorsement you are adding.  You will be issued a temporary permit listing the endorsement(s) while OSPI processes your new official certificate.
