The increasing number of immigrant students and English language learners in U.S. schools presents educators with opportunities and challenges: How to educate students to become effective citizens in their local communities, the nation, and the world? How to prepare students to deal with diversity in each of these settings? These questions guided the work of the Diversity, Citizenship, and Global Education Consensus Panel that was supported by the Spencer Foundation with continuing support from the University of Washington.
Democracy and Diversity is the product of a two-year project during which the Panel identified 4 important principles and 10 concepts that constitute essential elements of effective citizenship education programs in democratic multicultural nation-states. It also contains a Checklist designed to be used by educators who want to determine the extent to which the principles and concepts identified by the Panel are reflected in their classroom and schools.
This publication also contains an extensive and helpful bibliography of new and informative resources.
