Get the Information You Need

With its multitude of academic areas and divisions, study options, and research centers, the College of Education is a complex place.  But it doesn’t have to be difficult or intimidating to navigate these complexities and find needed information.  Browse through the three tabbed sections below to learn what kinds of information you can expect from various offices and people in the College, or contact us in the Office of Student Services. The OSS is located in 206 Miller Hall and is open Monday - Friday, from 8:00 to 5:00 (summer and break hours may vary).   You may contact the office by telephone at 206-543-7834 or by email at edinfo@u.washington.edu.

The role of the Area Offices is to assist students with the detailed and technical questions related to the Areas and the specific study options. The following are examples of questions and concerns that students should present to Area Offices.

  • Add codes for area courses and for internships and independent study work
  • Certification file maintenance (for those programs leading to certification)
  • Course and credit hour requirements for specific study options (where specific requirements exist – where no specific requirements exist, consult your faculty advisor; questions about electives could be presented to faculty advisors)
  • Courses availability and offerings (including when courses will be offered in the next year)
  • Internship questions and requirements
  • Registration questions and concerns

The role of the Office of Student Services is to assist students with College, Graduate School, and UW policies or procedures; initiate processes and obtain forms; and refer students to other campus offices/services when needed.  The office manages the application and admission process for the College and maintains student records.  In addition, the office helps students resolve unique problems or situations.  The following are examples of questions and concerns that students should present to Student Services.

  • Add codes for thesis and dissertation credit hours
  • Application/admission questions (for current students who wish to apply to new programs or degrees within the College)
  • Changing faculty advisors (process; consult faculty to determine best advising fit)
  • Degree completion steps, deadlines, and requirements
  • Forms for various processes and procedures
  • Funding questions (including College scholarships and RA/TA positions)
  • Graduation final steps, deadlines, and logistics
  • Master’s Exam registration and general information
  • On-Leave questions and forms
  • Petition information and processes
  • Referrals to other College and UW resources/offices
  • Research & Inquiry registration and general information
  • Transferring or applying previous coursework (requirements and processes; consult faculty advisors about applicability of previous courses)
  • Troubleshooting of unique problems or situations

The role of faculty advisors is to assist students with the overall coherence of their courses and their programs of study, and to attend to the “meta-questions” associated with graduate study – career/professional development, research interests and agendas, etc.  The following are examples of questions and concerns that students should present to their faculty advisors.  

Master’s Students

  • Career/professional development questions
  • Course selection (including course equivalents/substitutions and other deviations from standard courses)
  • Course of Study preparation
  • Culminating activities (theses, projects, portfolios, master’s exams)
  • Degree timeline planning
  • Doctoral degree preparations (for those planning to pursue advanced study)

Doctoral Students

  • Career/professional development questions
  • Course selection (including course equivalents/substitutions and other deviations from standard courses)
  • Course of Study preparation, including development of cognates and specialization(s)
  • Degree milestone preparation and planning (including prospective candidacy, research & inquiry, committee formation, general exam, dissertation proposal, and final exam)
  • Dissertation research and development
