The UW College of Education has an exciting series of events planned to help incoming students learn about the college, meet its faculty and other new students, and transition smoothly into life as a College of Education student.

8:30 AM – 11:30 AM Students of Color & International Student Orientation / Discussion – Miller Hall 212
Incoming students of color and international students are invited to attend this event to learn about relevant information and resources, and to participate in discussion about graduate student life in the College of Education. All students who have an interest in promoting and creating a culturally, racially, and ethnically diverse environment are invited to attend.
11:30 AM – 1:00 PM Students of Color & International Student Luncheon / Faculty Panel – Miller Hall 320
Attendees of the Students of Color and International Student Luncheon are invited to a buffet lunch to socialize with other students and with faculty and staff. All students who have an interest in promoting and creating a culturally, racially, and ethnically diverse environment are invited to attend.
12:30 PM – 2:00 PM Resource Fair – Miller Hall, 2nd Floor
One stop shopping to learn what you need to know to get you through grad school! All students should attend the Resource Fair, where student groups and staff from the College of Education as well as the University of Washington will welcome you and introduce you to their services. Come learn about these important campus resources!
2:30 - 3:00 PM UAW Academic Student Employee Union Presentation – Miller Hall 320
If you are a new Academic Student Employee (RA, TA, & GSA, etc.), please attend the UAW Academic Student Employee Union presentation. All students who have obtained assistantships for the first time, or plan to obtain assistantships during the 2009-2010 school year, are strongly encouraged to attend.
3:00 - 5:30 PM New Student Orientation – Miller Hall 301
Learn about the College, our resources, and hear from the people you will need to know during your degree program. The program includes a panel of returning master’s and/or doctoral students from each study area who will share their experiences and answer questions.
5:30 - 6:00 PM Peer-to-Peer Mentoring Program Introductions – Miller Hall, 3rd floor
Experienced student mentors and incoming student mentees have the opportunity to meet each other for the first time. Mentees learn from first-hand experience about the programs, practices, and norms of the College. It’s not too late to sign up, so please consider participating in this program, which enriches the lives of graduate students. 6:00 – 8:00 PM New Student Reception – The Burke Museum
Don’t miss this event! Come mingle with your peers, current students, alums, faculty, staff, and administration at this special evening reception. To be held at the Burke Museum, this reception is designed to help you meet faculty, staff, new and current students at the College. For those participating in the Peer to Peer Mentoring Program, peer mentors and mentees have the opportunity to further their introductory conversations.
We hope that you will be able to attend these additional events. They are designed to provide you with the information that you need to know as you begin this important new stage in your academic life, as well as to introduce you to other incoming and current graduate students in the College of Education who will become part of your support network in the coming years.

A panel of experienced students will help new students think about "what's next" in the quarter and in the academic year. There will be time set aside for questions - and afterwards, stay for a social hour with other students in the Peer-to-Peer Mentoring Program.

IRB/Human Subjects Workshop
Faculty and staff from the College who are familiar with research and with the regulations governing the use of human subjects in research will provide an overview of the steps you must take before conducting research using human subjects. This workshop is intended for doctoral students and advanced master’s students; all other interested graduate students are encouraged to attend, too.
