Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. I have questions about what courses to take. Who can help me with this?

Your faculty advisor will assist you in planning your coursework.

  2. I want to take a quarter off. What do I need to do?

Your status must be accounted for every quarter exceptStudents summer*. This means you must be either registered or on leave. You may apply to go on leave for up to 4 quarters. The on leave application form is available in Office of Student Services, 206 Miller. It must be signed by the Graduate Program Coordinator (located in 206). You then need to turn in the approved form to the Registration office in Schmize Hall by the 5th day of the quarter that you are going on leave.

*Note: If you are graduating summer quarter, you must be registered.

  3. I am graduating this quarter, what do I need to do?

First, you must be registered for the quarter you are graduating.

Second, if you are a Master's student, you must apply to graduate on the Graduate School website. The form for completing your Master's degree can be found here. You must make sure that all I, X, or N grades are cleared from your record.

Our office posts reminders about the deadline dates each quarter on the Education listserv and on our bulletin board outside the OSS.

  4. Do I need to be registered the quarter I graduate?

Yes! Even during the summer, you must be registered for at least 1 credit in order to graduate that quarter.

  5. How can I request to waive a course?

You may fill out a College of Education petition form. The form can be found here. It can also be picked up in the OSS.

  6. What can I do if I lose my status? If you are not registered or on leave (with the exception of summer), you will lose your status. You must then re-apply to the Graduate School and the College of Education. You can do this by filling out the online application which is found here. Be sure the printed copies are turned into the OSS. Contact our office with any questions about re-applying.

  7. How can I stay informed about policies, procedures, and deadlines?

OSS uses the Education listserv to post important and timely information about completion, courses, policies, deadlines, and other issues that affect your schooling. To Subscribe to the Education Listserv (education@u.washington.edu.) go to http://mailman.u.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/education and follow the instructions. Students should also consult the College of Education's Graduate Student Manual. Copies are also available in the Office of Student Services

  8. I am a current COE student that wants to apply for another program or degree. What do I do?

You must apply to the program but for current students it is a unique process. Contact the Office of Student Services for more information or email edinfo@u.washington.edu.

  9. How can I find out about scholarships or financial aid?

Scholarships are offered once a year and the deadline is in the Spring. Check both our financial aid page and scholarship page for more information. You are highly encouraged to apply for these scholarships.

  10. What RA/TA positions are available?

Research assistant and Teaching assistant positions are posted here on the website as they become available.

  11. How do I get verification of my enrollment in the COE?

The registration office can provide proof of enrollment or degree completion. Their office is located in Schmitz Hall.

  12. How do I form my committee

Once advanced to Prospective Candidacy, your first task is the formation of a Supervisory Committee. In concert with your advisor, you should explore with members of the graduate faculty their willingness to serve on your Supervisory Committee. Each member of a Supervisory Committee will devote substantial time to working with the Ph.D. student and each should formally indicate willingness to serve. The Chairperson of the Supervisory Committee should express a willingness and availability to supervise a dissertation, since this is normally the most time-consuming responsibility.

Normally the Committee consists of a Chair, a faculty member from your Broad Area, a faculty member from your Field of Specialization outside Education, a faculty representative for each of your cognate areas, and a Graduate School Representative (GSR) appointed by the Graduate School. The number of faculty on your committee will depend upon your program. Only one non-graduate faculty can be a member of the Supervisory Committee, and that individual may not serve as the chair. A more detailed description of the committee's composition can be found in the document entitled, "The Composition of the Ph.D. Supervisory Committee for the College of Education." PhD and EdD forms are available in the Office of Student Services, 206 Miller.

Once you have identified appropriate graduate faculty who are willing to serve, their names should be submitted to the Associate Dean, Steve Kerr (the Graduate Program Coordinator). (Forms are available in the Office of Student Services.) You should form a Supervisory Committee as soon after your advancement to Prospective Candidacy as feasible; it must be accomplished within the calendar year following your advancement, no later than one quarter prior to the R&I presentation, and no later than four months prior to the General Examination.

Your next task is to meet with the Supervisory Committee to plan a course of study in preparation for a General Examination and to develop a research program for your Research and Inquiry presentation. Between Supervisory Committee meetings, it will be the Chairperson's responsibility to serve as your advisor.

  13. I need to change a member of my committee. How do I do that?

The same form used for establishing your Supervisory Committee is also used to change its composition. Forms are available here.

  14. Can I extend my time limit for completion?

You may submit a petition form for the Graduate School. The form must be filled out online at http://www.grad.washington.edu/area/petition.html
