Academic Background:
Highline Community College, A.A. with honors, Music emphasis
University of Washington, B.A. cum laude, Mathematics with Teacher Preparation
Experience:
At Highline Community College I worked as a piano accompanist and music tutor. For many years my focus was on music and theater. But, inspired by my calculus instructors at Highline, I became more and more interested in mathematics. After I transferred to the University of Washington, my focus turned entirely to math and math education. For the past two years I have volunteered at Chief Sealth High School in West Seattle, helping students with math in the after school homework center. I love working with students and sharing my passion for mathematics. My favorite topics are geometry and trigonometry. I'm also interested in ethnomathematics and math history.
Interests:
In my spare time I enjoy reading and crocheting. In the summer I like being outdoors and going hiking. I also volunteer with Twelfth Night Productions, a non-profit theater group in West Seattle.

Experience:
have spent the majority of my time teaching at marine and environmental science schools, in Georgia, Michigan, Illinois, and Washington. Most of these programs brought students from the inner city out of the urban setting and into “unknown” hand on science experiences in the outdoors. A big hope of mine is to stem from these programs and bring the outdoors into the every day classroom. While at Dickinson College, I earned the following awards: Senator of the Year, Omicron Delta Kappa Woman of the Year, Senior Class Award, and the Presidents Hufsteader Senior Prize for dedication to the school.
In the summers I worked as an adventure trip guide leading backpacking, kayaking, and white water canoe trips for teens. It was on one of these trips last summer that I realized my desire and potential as a professional science educator, not just someone who did it on the side. For the past two years, I have led weekend service and recreation trips with Seattle high schools students as a crew leader for the Conservation Leaders Corps program, of the Student Conservation Association. I loved working with teens in each of my programs and was always sad to say goodbye at the end or each trip, which is why I am so excited about full time involvement in the schools.
Interests:
Skiing, backpacking, sea kayaking, bicycle adventures, trail running, sailing, live music, baking, reading books in one sitting, photography, old growth forests, conservation/trail work, and exploring new places!

As an undergraduate, I tutored biology at the Office of Minority Affairs Instructional Center where I was able to share my love for biology by helping others to understand it. I took this interest further by peer TAing for an introductory level biology course where I really felt a connection to my students. My decision to pursue teaching science was solidified by my year of service with an Americorps program called City Year. I was able to tutor Seattle's middle school students in class, work with them after school and engage them in service on Saturdays. Initially, I wanted to share my experiences in science with others but after a working intensely with students in Seattle, my focus has become creating positive and meaningful relationships with the students I will teach.

Experience:
I grew up on a farm in rural Michigan. I began my undergraduate education at Deep Springs College, in eastern California, and then stayed on as a cowboy after graduation, helping to manage the College’s herd of beef cattle. During my time at Deep Springs, I met Lis, a midshipman at the Naval Academy. After her graduation, we married and moved to Oxford, England, where she pursued a Masters in Chinese Studies. She is currently stationed on a destroyer out of Everett. I have just finished a BS in Earth and Space Science at UW, and I hope to teach Earth Sciences or Chemistry at the high school level.
Interests:
I’m involved with several pro-choice and sex-ed groups on campus, as well as an environmental group. I also helped coach the Shorecrest high school wrestling team this past season. Much of my free time is spent hiking in the Cascades.

A majority of my teaching experience comes from my Marine Science Instructor position I held at the Catalina Island Marine Institute on Catalina Island, Cherry Cove. CIMI sponsors an outdoor educational program focusing on life and earth sciences enhancement for 4th to 12th graders. I led 15 student study groups during three to five day programs. We lectured on oceanography, island ecology, astronomy, and held laboratory sessions that involved plankton, algae, fish and mammal dissection and observation in natural settings. We also involved students in kayak orienteering and snorkeling. What better way to see California’s Marine Ecology than snorkeling in it for a few hours a day! I was also the Head Site Supervisor and Lead Teacher at the Princeton YWCA After-School Program which was involved in the mentoring and tutoring of more than 100 K-5 grade students. Throughout my undergraduate career I was a Teaching Assistant for Public Communications and Computer Technology Courses. I was also inducted into the National Biological Sciences Honor Society and into Alpha Zeta College of Ag. And Life Sciences Honor Society.
Interests:
My life isn’t complete without a good cup of coffee, old friends, poetry, and a hardy laugh. I’m a vegan, love traveling and volunteering, raise and train International Champion Arabian Show Horses with my mom, love hiking and mountaineering, camping, rock climbing and getting dirty. You won’t see me without music or a smile.

I became interested in teaching via a program called the UW Dream Project; this program connected me with some amazing high school students who taught me about some of the discrepancies that exist in the public education system. Once I started exploring the field, I couldn't stop. I began to (and still do) volunteer an hour per week with an especially vibrant fourth-grade girl at T.T. Minor Elementary through Big Brothers, Big Sisters. I made an effort to take as many teaching-focused classes I could, and observed in as many different classroom settings as I could find, all while working as a science tutor for SAAS at UW. I was also fortunate enough to spend my senior year as a Zesbaugh Scholar, which allowed me to really delve into educational theory and social justice. After I graduated, I really got my feet wet by working as a Teaching Associate in the Department of Biology for two quarters at UW, teaching 3 different labs. Long story short, I love finding ways to guide each and every student to discovery in a scientific context, and can't get enough of the challenge! I am psyched to begin the MIT program at UW, where I can get back into practical experience while exploring the theoretical side of things in an academic setting.
Interests:
Hiking, camping, live music, cooking, the ocean, Español, traveling.

Academic Background:
University of California at Berkeley, B.S., Bioengineering
Stanford University School of Medicine, Ph.D., Immunology
Experience:
During my career I have discovered a love for science, research, and teaching. As a teaching assistant in the introductory immunology course at Stanford, I was awarded an Excellence in Teaching award. I designed and taught a course called “HIV, AIDS, and the Immune System” for local high school students. I volunteered for the Association of Women in Science outreach program and the Expanding Your Horizons conference, teaching middle and high school students a hands-on workshop called “Virus Detectives.” I also co-taught Immunology X110 through UC Berkeley Extension. During this time I was an Executive Director of an annual graduate student-led conference called the Western Conference in Immunology, where I tirelessly advocated for student growth and participation. Upon graduation I moved to Seattle to join the Institute for Systems Biology as a post-doctoral research scientist and renewed my love for teaching with the amazing people at the Center for Inquiry Science (CIS). Because of CIS, I decided to become a professional science teacher with the goal of helping all kids understand, not only how science affects their lives, but also, how they can use it for positive change. I just finished teaching two quarters of introductory biology as an Adjunct Professor at North Seattle Community College and am now focusing my efforts full-time on the Teacher Education Program here at UW.
Interests:
As for hobbies, I have a sweet little two-year old son who is struggling to show his independence! With him, my husband and I scour Seattle and the Puget Sound area for fun and educational events. Of those, we particularly enjoy orienteering, hiking, camping, bicycling, theater, cultural events, and, well, anywhere we can go jump on things and laugh.
