Undergraduate Scholarship

  • The Catherine Zesbaugh Scholarship was established as a mechanism to encourage and support economically disadvantaged students with an interest in teaching. The scholarship is provided to undergraduate students (juniors and seniors) who are interested in pursuing a career in education (elementary or secondary education). Eligible students are provided a year long scholarship of $1500 per quarter. The students are required to participate in a year long seminar designed to introduce scholars to current trends and issues impacting education (nationally and locally). The seminar encourages students to thoughtfully reflection on their contribution to the teaching profession. Zesbaugh Scholars are required to work closely with a faculty mentor during the year on a research project. The project is presented at the spring research/leadership events (University of Washington Undergraduate Research Symposium or Carlson Center Spring Celebration). Students are allowed to present their research projects to their peers, mentors, and other invited guests during "in class" presentations arranged through the Zesbaugh Scholars Faculty Advisor.

Travel Grants

(Please note: No additional travel grant requests can be funded for the 2007-2008 academic year)

The College of Education provides a limited number of travel grants to our graduate students who are making presentations at professional conferences and do not have other sources of funding. The money is limited; grants are approved on a first come basis until the funds are depleted. Each student may receive only one grant per academic year.

Students should investigate other sources of funding before applying for travel grants.  Many conferences provide travel funds for graduate students. In addition, divisions or subgroups within larger organizations often fund students (divisions within AERA, for example, provide funding). Check conference and organization websites for potential opportunities.

Grants awarded may be used for airfare, lodging, mileage, and/or registration fees and are administered by Faculty Council. The council has decided that for the 2007-2008 academic year, $350 will be the maximum awarded for each grant (or up to $500 for international travel, airfare only); the awards will be applied to the cost of the state contract airfare and/or lodging or $350, whichever is LESS. Reservations may be made through the College Business Office or you may make reservations on your own. If you purchase your own ticket, receipts are needed to be reimbursed and reservations MUST BE MADE through a state approved travel agent. A list of the approved travel agents is at:

http://www.washington.edu/admin/travel/travel.agencies.2001b.html

The Graduate School provides money to the College of Education for student travel (also administered Faculty Council) with the added requirement that the recipients have Candidate Status.

Students apply for funding by downloading and filling out the Travel Grant Application (Word doc).
