The College of Education, through its Faculty Council, distributes a number of scholarships annually. Most of these scholarships are possible through the generous gifts of the alums, friends, faculty and staff of the College of Education.
Only continuing and incoming College of Education students are eligible for College of Education scholarships. Some scholarships have additional, specific criteria based on the intent of the donor(s). (See list of criteria»).
All incoming admitted students are considered automatically for College of Education scholarships. Except for those admitted to the Teacher Education Program*, no separate application is required for incoming students. (A separate application is required for continuing students – please see below).
* Admitted TEP/MIT students will receive additional information during Winter quarter (Secondary) or Spring quarter (Elementary).
To be considered for College of Education scholarships that are need-based, applicants/students should complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 1, 2012, if at all possible. Eligibility regarding need-based financial aid is determined by the FAFSA. When completing the FAFSA, make sure to enter the University of Washington, Code #003798, in Step 6.
International applicants/students who have a Social Security number should submit the FAFSA form per the above instructions. International applicants/students who do not have a Social Security number must wait to have financial need evaluated until after review by the Scholarship Review Committee. This is done through a separate process. Please note that financial need is not considered in the initial review of scholarship applications.
In past years some students have been awarded more than one of the College’s scholarships. In addition, it is sometimes the case that larger scholarship award amounts are divided and distributed to more than one student.
Academic history shows merit: strong academic record, consistency with goal statement, academic awards or honors
Goals related to education: clear, insightful goals which articulate a contribution to research or practice.
Life experience: linked broadly to education or learning; clear relationship between experience and goals; nonacademic awards and experience, service and volunteer work; experience with diverse groups or cultures; obstacles overcome.
Potential to contribute to field of education: collegiality, enthusiasm, professional involvement, leadership, diverse talents or background.
Admitted and current students will be considered for scholarships in two steps. An initial review will be conducted by faculty from each Academic Area/Program who will then forward their top admits/students to the scholarship review committee. The scholarship review committee consists of faculty members and a student representative. The Academic Area faculty and the scholarship review committee will use the above criteria when making decisions.
Continuing students who wish to be considered for scholarships should upload an updated goal statement that includes a reflection on your academic and professional experiences as well as an updated curriculum vitae or resume’ to the Office of Student Services using the online process described below.
College of Education scholarships are intended primarily to assist incoming students during their first quarters of study; therefore, incoming students are given first consideration by the review committee. Continuing students will receive consideration in the event that awards are not granted to incoming students.
Continuing students must upload the following information to the Office of Student Services by 6:00pm on Friday, February 24, 2012, using this online process:
