Leonore Annenberg Teaching Fellowship of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation

OVERVIEW

Accomplished, well-prepared, effective teachers shape students’ lives.  Not many professions offer that kind of impact or reward. Few matter more to the nation’s future.

The Leonore Annenberg Teaching Fellowship of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, with support from the Annenberg Foundation and Carnegie Corporation, has established a new wilson logosignature Fellowship to recruit and prepare great teachers for the students and schools that need them most.

The Leonore Annenberg Fellowship at the University of Washington will fund math and science secondary teaching candidates of the highest caliber. Fellows will participate in a field-based program, which integrates academic and clinical instruction. Preparation will extend into the first three years of teaching in urban, incorporating induction and mentoring programs that feature ongoing school-University cooperation.

Like the Rhodes Scholarship, the Annenberg Teaching Fellowship is designed to identify candidates of the highest caliber, character, and potential. The Fellowship will fund 25 $30,000 fellowships for UW math & science teachers from 2010 – 2012. There are 8 fellowships available for UW Teacher Education Program applicants beginning in 2009, 8 for applicants in 2010, and 9 for applicants in 2011. Fellows will be prepared as a cohort, in master’s-level programs selected for their quality, commitment to excellence, and record of success. The majority of their preparation takes place in schools and classrooms, under the supervision of both accomplished faculty and expert practitioners.
In exchange, Fellows agree to teach for three years in high-need secondary schools. Fellows will be given intensive mentoring and support during their first three years of teaching. They also become lifelong members of a national network of Woodrow Wilson Fellows who are among America’s most distinguished thinkers, artists, scientists, and education leaders.

The Leonore Annenberg Teaching Fellowship provides a $30,000 stipend for master’s-level teacher preparation at some of the nation’s top teacher-education programs. Fellows then teach for three years, with ongoing mentoring, in urban or rural schools that serve a significant number of high-need students. The first four Annenberg Fellowship programs are hosted by Stanford University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Virginia, and the University of Washington.
