Endowed gifts are a way to create a permanent funding source for the College. Donors can establish endowments through outright gifts of cash, securities, or bequests. These gifts can be used to create scholarships, provide student, faculty, or program support and to provide funding for research purposes. Interest earned from the endowment is used for a general or donor-specified purpose.
There are four categories of endowments:
Scholarship and Fellowship support is often the only way some students are able to pursue graduate studies in Education. Unfortunately, the College of Education has few scholarships to award to students. The high cost of tuition and lack of scholarships force many students to borrow to fund their education. Faced with the possibility of upwards of $30,000 in debt, some students are forced to reconsider a career in education.
The SCCC/UW Teachers for a New Era Program aims to cultivate a cohort of teachers (starting at the community college level) which is aware of—and responsive to—issues particular to economically disadvantaged elementary school students. Funding for scholarships for these students.

Funding for professorship and chair positions is essential to attract and retain outstanding faculty and maintain excellence in teaching and research. Endowments for these positions can be named for the donor or in honor of a treasured mentor, colleague or family member. The College of Education is currently seeking financial support for:
Endowed Chair in Early Childhood Education
A child's early educational opportunities can impact lifelong success. According to the state's Thrive by Five public-privatepartnership for education, successful early learners are more likely to attend college, gain employment, and become law-abiding citizens. To maximize the impact of early learning, the College has determined the need for a key focus on early childhood education and is increasing its already strong commitment to improving Early Childhood Education. The College is creating an Early Childhood Education Chair position to lead curriculum development and early intervention programs for both typically-developing and special need students.
Professorship in Math and Science
The United States is finding it increasingly difficult to compete in the global market - our corporations struggle to find qualified scientists, engineers, and researchers and are often forced to recruit their workforce from abroad. Students in Washington state are underperforming in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) disciplines as evidenced by Governor Gregoire's postponement of the WASL math and science requirements until 2013. The UW College of Education seeks funding for an endowed professorship for the director of a math/science center focused on improving math/science education in Washington.
