A beaming Dean Pat Wasley, delivered the welcome address, stating, “We are
counting on you to change the system; we believe that you will invest your newly honed intellect, passion, and expertise in creating a better education system. Our country desperately needs you to fulfill that particular promise, that hope for change.”
Dean Wasley also awarded the prestigious Distinguished Graduate Award to College of Education alumni Governor Christine Gregoire. The award, which was
established in 1986, has previously been awarded to Dr. John Corbally, former President of the MacArthur Foundation, and Harold Morse, promoter of the Educational Television Networks’ The Learning Channel and Ovation – The Arts Channel. Drs. Lynda King and Daniel King, both UW College of Education graduates, were jointly honored last year for their nationally recognized work in the study of trauma and its effect on children and the treatment. Said Wasley, “Governor Gregoire’s lifelong service to this state and her commitment to education have made us so proud to claim her as an alumnus. Indeed, her contributions to improving education will set a new standard for future recipients.”
The Keynote address was delivered by professor and Dean Emeritus Allen Glenn. A leader in the field of teacher education, Glenn is retiring from the College of Education after a long, illustrious career as an educator, administrator, and leader. He will be remembered for his commitment to the students. As Associate Dean of Academic Programs and Professor Tom Stritikus stated “Of the many things to note about Allen, it is most important to note that, for Allen, it always has been and always will be about the students.”
College of Education Awards were given to students, who were honored by ear-shattering applause and boisterous catcalls:
Diem Nguyen was awarded the Gordon C. Lee Award for an outstanding dissertation.
Graduate Student Leadership Awards were given to Isaac Gottesman, Kersti Tyson, I-Chen Huang, and Julie Kang for the exhibition of outstanding qualities of leadership, commuity service, and academic achievement.
The Teacher Mentor Award was awarded to Judy Schaad for providing excellent mentoring to the students of the College of Education.
