Shaheen Ariefdien was born in Cape Town, South Africa. He is a teacher who has always been politically and socially conscious - which stems from his school days as an anti-apartheid activist. Shaheen is also a rapper and producer and he made his mark in South Africa’s hip hop industry, as one of the key members of the pioneering South African hip-hop group, Prophets of da City. his research area focuses on hip-hop and education.

This talk was part of the UW Simpson Center's Popular Culture and the Arts in Africa series, building on the research and teaching interests of a number of Africanist faculty and graduate students at the University of Washington, and introducing African material and perspectives into campus and community conversation on contemporary music, visual media, and graphic arts.
