John Bransford was installed as the Shauna C. Larson Endowed Chair in Learning Sciences, an endowed chair that was established by anonymous donors with a tremendous commitment to equity in education.

As Dean Wasley stated in her introduction, “Dr. Bransford is a leader in the science of learning, which is being recognized as a discipline in its own right, partly through John’s cutting-edge research on the science of learning…In the four years that John has been at the College of Education, we’ve seen enormous gains in the science of learning, both at the College and across the nation.”

From his work as the  Principal Investigator and Director of the Learning in Informal and Formal Environments (LIFE) Center to his work building partnerships with Microsoft, Boeing, the Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians, and a host of other local and national organizations, Bransford was celebrated for his contributions to his field and to the College community.

Additionally, Philip Bell was installed with the Geda and Phil Condit Professorship in Math and Science Education. Geda is a University of Washington aeronautics engineering alum and Phil, former Boeing CEO, is an active member of the College of Education’s Visiting Committee. In addition to providing a substantial contribution, they helped raise additional support from Boeing for the professorship.

“Dr. Bell is an extraordinary scholar,” Dean Wasley stated. “I count Phil as a friend and as an esteemed colleague. While his research is very impressive, his contributions to the College of Education cannot be measured. He is remarkably savvy and truly makes our community a better place.

Bell was recognized nationally this year for his testimony before the U.S. House of Representative’s Science and Technology Subcommittee on Research and Science Education on a recent National Academies report that Bell co-authored, which was titled ‘Learning Science in Informal Environments: People, Places, and Pursuits.’  He is also the Director of the UW Institute for Science and Mathematics Education, which was designed to align and share University expertise and resources with K-12 teachers, administrators, and community members to create high-quality, systemic approaches to mathematics and science education for all students.
