The Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) announced that Walter Parker’s "Research and Practice" column in Social Education was judged the best column or department in an educational periodical to have been published in 2008.
Since 2001, Parker has edited a Social Education journal column, which is titled "Social Studies Today: Research and Practice”. Parker writes, "As editor, I invite fellow social studies researchers to write on what they know best. I have columns on such questions as: Why don't more history teachers actually engage students in historical inquiry? Can tolerance be taught? What is historical thinking? How are teachers responding to globalization?”
In August 2009, the articles that Parker has published in his column will be collected in a book by Routledge. Entitled Social Studies Today: Research and Practice, the book includes opening and closing chapters written by Parker.
