Sheila Valencia inducted into Reading Hall of Fame

College of Education faculty member Sheila Valencia was inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame at the International Reading Association’s 54th annual convention. This honor results from a competitive process—to be inducted nominees have to meet specific criteria for literacy research and education, after which the current members vote on the nominees. Criteria for Valencia’s nomination included over 25 years of active work in the field of reading, a stellar reputation amongst peers, outstanding publication record of significant research, and preparation of leaders in the reading field.

sheila valenciaA Professor in Curriculum and Instruction at the UW College of Education, Valencia’s specialties include reading and writing instruction, literacy assessment, and professional development of teachers. Her books include Literacy Portfolios in Action and Authentic Reading Assessment: Practices and Possibilities, and she has published numerous articles in professional journals.  She also serves on several national and state advisory panels focused on large-scale and classroom-based reading assessment.

“My heroes are in the Reading Hall of Fame,” Valencia states. “It’s a great honor to be among the leaders in reading and reading research, people who are respected by peers and have been recognized for making a contribution.”

Since her induction, Valencia has received numerous calls and letters from fans and colleagues, all touting how her work in literacy has made a difference in their lives and research. Her numerous fans include Taffy E, Raphael, a 2002 inductee into the Reading Hall of Fame and one of Valencia’s nominators.

“Sheila's election to the Hall of Fame acknowledges her leadership at the intersection of literacy education and policy,” Raphael wrote. “Her landmark work in the area of literacy assessment has helped both researchers and practitioners design more effective instructional interventions, as well as stronger professional development for teachers and administrative leaders.”

Established in 1973, the Reading Hall of Fame is dedicated to improving reading instruction throughout the world.
