Spotlight on Students

Martinez Scholar: Betzabeth Alvarado-Jurista

Hometown: Valencia, Venezuela

Why do you want to become a teacher?
beth alvarado-jurista, martinez scholarI want to become a teacher because children are in desperate need of having effective and passionate teachers.

Why did you choose the College of Education?
I chose the College of Education at the University of Washington because it offers a prestigious and well-organized Master in Teaching Program.

Who was one of your most influential teachers?
I did not have any influential teachers; however, my husband and especially my two young children are my great inspiration to become a teacher.

What do you hope to accomplish as a future teacher?
As a future teacher, I am excited to serve as a role model for all my students.  My goal is to teach minority students to be proud of their ethnic identities and cultural background because they need to stop being ashamed of who they are.  I believe that we need to teach our students about meaningful multicultural content.
I would like to add that I am attending the University of Washington because Holli and Edgar Martinez made it possible.  I am honored and thankful to be part of the Martinez Foundation.
