Martinez Scholars: Mariana “Mari” Padilla

Why do you want to become a teacher?
I think that education is a social justice issue. We cannot have a true democracy mariana padilla, martinez scholaruntil all students are receiving an adequate education. I think that one teacher can make a difference in the life of a student.

Why did you choose the College of Education?
I thought that the University of Washington was the best place to prepare me to be a teacher in today's diverse classrooms. I really appreciate U.W.'s emphasis on multicultural education.

Who was one of your most influential teachers?
My 11th and 12th grade history teacher Mrs. Schick's teaching caused me to be passionate about history and art history, a passion I that hold onto today. It is this enthusiasm for the subject that inspires me to teach it to others.

What do you hope to accomplish as a future teacher?
Making kids love history again. History is not just a dry list of dates and names, it's about the people on the ground that were involved in an event. I plan to teach more of a social history.
