Transcript of Dean Wasley's remarks at the presentation of the 2008 Distinguished Graduate Award to Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire.

Every year, the faculty of the University of Washington College of Education vote to nominate candidates for the Distinguished Graduate Award.

The Distinguished Graduate Award was established in 1986 and is awarded annually to a College of Education graduate of marked distinction.  Past christine gregoirerecipients have included Dr. John Corbally, former President of the MacArthur Foundation, and Harold Morse, promoter of the Educational Television Networks’ The Learning Channel and Ovation – The Arts Channel.  Drs. Lynda King and Daniel King, both UW College of Education graduates, were jointly honored last year for their nationally recognized work in the study of trauma and its effect on children and the treatment.

It is my pleasure to name Governor Christine Gregoire as the 2008 recipient of the Distinguished Graduate Award.

Her ongoing commitment to educational excellence, access and equity make her the ideal candidate for the Distinguished Graduate Award. As Governor play video graphicGregoire’s labors to create a world-class education system in Washington have directly influenced our community, she is the most deserving of this award.

It is no secret that the Governor’s work in education is much admired by all of us at the University of Washington College of Education. From the creation of the Department of Early Learning to improvements in math and science education, her efforts have borne a direct impact on the great state of Washington as well as the lives of our students and our faculty. Her education initiatives have sustained real progress for Washington’s education system overall.

Governor Gregoire’s lifelong service to this state and her commitment to education have made us so proud to claim her as an alumnus.  Indeed, her contributions to improving education will set a new standard for future recipients. She has remarked about how her time at the UW College of Education prepared her for a life of service. As an alumni myself, I appreciate and empathize with this sentiment.
