Despite the prevalence of policies aimed at, and widespread images of, individual teachers working to improve persistent problems of schooling, a preponderance of evidence shows that teacher play video graphic communities matter most in overcoming systemic inequalities. How do we reconcile the intuitively powerful idea of individual teachers’ beliefs shaping classroom practices with sociocultural perspectives that highlight the significance of teaching cultures? In this talk, Professor Horn synthesizes findings from studies she has worked on over the past decade that explore different facets of this question.
