Overview

At the UW College of Education, we believe that preparing educators is essential to preserving our democracy and transmitting our diverse culture to future generations. Through our preparation of scholar/teachers and through the nationally- and internationally-recognized scholarship of the College faculty, we are having immediate, visible effects on the excellence and equity of public education.

All College of Education degrees are graduate degrees. For information about undergraduate opportunities, please see undergraduate studies.

Degrees

M.I.T.

The College awards a Master in Teaching through the Teacher Education Program which results in a Washington State Residency Teaching Certificate. The TEP Student Hub is a rich resource for anyone wishing to find out more about the M.I.T. program.

Ph.D and Ed.D.

The College awards two doctoral degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Doctor of Education (Ed.D.). The Ph.D. prepares students for careers of research and teaching at the college level. StudentsVisiting applicants interested in advanced professional practice directed mainly toward the application and transmission of existing knowledge usually select the Ed.D. The two degrees are equivalent in rigor but emphasize different aspects of the education profession.

M.Ed.

The College awards two Master's degrees: Master of Education (M.Ed.) (see areas listed below) and Master in Teaching (M.I.T). The M.Ed. provides intermediate-level graduate training which enhances professional knowledge and prepares students for further graduate study, if desired.

Areas

There are four broad educational disciplines, or areas, within the College of Education:

All four areas offer the Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Ph.D. degrees. The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) is offered by all areas except Educational Psychology. Please refer to each area's Web page for detailed information concerning program offerings, study options, faculty research interests, and more.

Additionally, the College of Education offers several interdisciplinary programs, drawing faculty from across the College and University.

Taking Courses

Individuals who wish to take a course through the College of Education, but who have not been admitted to the Graduate School, may enroll as Graduate Non-Matriculated (GNM) students. Details
