The application deadline varies by program.  For a complete list of application deadlines, please see here.
  2. I am an international student. When do I need to do to apply?
The deadline for all international applications is November 1st. If applications are received after this deadline, we cannot guarantee that visa applications, etc., will be processed in time for you to matriculate.

Application/admission process

  1. How do I know exactly what I need to submit for my application?
Check both general and specific program application requirements for the masters and doctoral programs.  You may also search for your program of interest here: http://www.grad.washington.edu/admissions/viewchoice.html. You will also receive specific instructions as you proceed through your on-line application.
  2. What is the process once my application has been received?
Applications for most Female student listening, with blue penprograms are processed in the Office of Student Services. You will receive a letter within 2-3 weeks of submitting your application that will alert you to any missing application materials.  Files are sent to the Admissions committees for review approximately two weeks after the application deadline for each program. Generally it takes about 8-10 weeks after the deadline for the committees to review and make decisions on files. Target decision dates can be found on the deadlines page.
  3. I am a current COE student and I want to apply for another program. Do I need to re-apply?
If you are a current COE student, please visit, call, or email the Office of Student Services. We'll be able to inform you of what you need to do to apply for a different program or another degree.
  4. How do I find out information about your Master's in Teaching (M.I.T.) program?
If you are interested in our Master in Teaching program, click here

Submitting application materials

  1. Since you have an on-line application, do I still turn in paper application materials?
Although you can submit nearly all of the application materials on-line, you may have to submit originals or copies of some items to either the Graduate School or the College of Education, depending on your status and depending on the program to which you apply. Please read the on-line instructions carefully, and then contact the Office of Student Services if you have any questions (edinfo@u.washington.edu or 206-543-7834).
  2. Should my application materials be received by the deadline or postmarked by the deadline?
Your materials must be received by the deadline.
  3. Can I send letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc. before I submit my on-line application?
COE StudentWe strongly encourage you to submit your application materials with your on-line application, where possible.  Any materials that that you include in the online application do not need to be sent in paper form.  However, if we receive loose materials before you submit your on-line application, we will hold them and include them in your file at the appropriate time.
  4. To which office do I send my application materials?
Again, we strongly encourage you to submit your application materials with your on-line application, where possible.  If you must send something by mail, however, the Office of Student Services in the College of Education processes applications for most – not all – College of Education programs. Our address is:

    Office of Student Services
    College of Education/University of Washington
    206 Miller, Box 353600
    Seattle, WA 98195-3600

Certain programs (for example, the Danforth program and the Intercollegiate Athletics Leadership program) have a different mailing address.  Please read the on-line instructions carefully, and then contact the Office of Student Services if you have any questions (edinfo@u.washington.edu or 206-543-7834).
  5. How can I tell which materials you have received?
When you complete your on-line application, you will be provided with a link in which you can go back and check the status of your application materials. You will also be sent a letter when your application is processed that will alert you to any missing materials.  We update the status of application materials as quickly as possible but please allow 2-3 weeks for materials to be marked as “received” in the online application.
  6. I just checked my application online and it indicates that the application materials I mailed in haven't been received.  Can you check to see if it is there?
Due to the high volume of applications we receive it takes 2-3 weeks for our office to process your application and check in all your materials. Once we have done so you'll receive a letter verifying that your application is complete or alerting you to any missing items. If something is missing you’ll have an opportunity to submit it before your file is reviewed.
  7. Do I need to send anything to the Graduate School?

US citizens: If you have attended schools outside the US, you must send official transcripts to the Graduate School as well as to the College of Education.

  8. International Applicants: You must send to the Graduate School official transcripts, statement of financial ability, official GRE and TOEFL scores, and, if applicable, copies of current visa documents.  For more information, click here.
