How to Apply
Doctoral Degree Admission Requirements
General Requirements
The requirements listed below are required for admission to all Doctoral degree programs in the College of Education. Please note that each individual program may have additional requirements, so also consult the specific requirements for each program.
1. Graduate Record Exam
The GRE General Test is required for all programs. This computer-based test is widely available and may be scheduled by calling 1-800-GRE-CALL. You may also visit GRE online. Request that your scores be sent to the University of Washington: our institutional code number is R4854. Any "Education" code will work. Testing is available throughout the year by appointment. Early registration is advised as space may be limited. International Students are also required to submit TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores.
2. Master's degree or equivalent from an accredited institution (some programs may permit direct admission to a doctoral program without a master’s degree, contact individual programs for more information)
3. Grade point average of 3.0 from the most recent 90 (60 semester) credits
4. Transcripts
One official (sealed) transcript from each college or university attended.
5. Goal statement
The goal statement is a very important part of the application process. Admissions committees use the goal statement, along with other evidence, to determine whether applicants' needs and our programs are well-matched. Goal statements range from 3-5 pages for Ph.D. or Ed.D applicants. Your program may have specific items to include in your goal statement. For more specific information, please see the program web sites listed below. There is a space in the online application for you to paste or type in your goal statement.
6. Letters of Recommendation
Three (3) letters from persons who are able to assess your potential for success in a graduate degree program. As part of the online registration process, you will be given instructions for having letters of recommendation submitted electronically. If your recommender cannot submit his or her letter online, a recommendation form may be downloaded for their use.
7. Resume/Vita
A current academic and professional resume or vita is required. In addition to educational degrees and professional experience, the vita should include a listing of all relevant awards, publications, presentations, or other achievements that will help us evaluate your application. There is a space for your resume or vita on the online application form: you can compose it in your word processor and paste it into the form.
8. Writing sample(s)
If you are a doctoral applicant you must submit one or more samples of scholarly writing (e.g., master's thesis, course papers, articles, essays). The sample should demonstrate how well you can analyze or synthesize and critically reflect on information. At least one writing sample must have been written by you alone. If you have no appropriate examples of scholarly writing, we urge you to consider preparing a medium-length (10-12 page) critical essay review of a book that you feel is central to your interests in education.
9. Interviews
Some programs may require an admission interview. Please see specific program information for the doctorate degree.

Prior Coursework
Certain UW courses taken as a nonmatriculated student may be used toward an advanced degree. Check with the Office of Student Services for further details, as a number of restrictions limit the use of nonmatriculated coursework.
Use of graduate coursework from another institution may be used upon approval of a formal petition presented to the Graduate Program Coordinator. Petitions may be processed after you have completed one quarter as a graduate student and no later than one quarter prior to completing your master's degree. Appropriate coursework taken as a UW graduate nonmatriculated student may be applied to your degree and does not require a petition.
You may apply a maximum of 12 quarter credits to your master's degree earned in courses as a Graduate Nonmatriculated student, and/or courses transferred from another university. Credit by either independent study through correspondence or advanced credit examination is not transferable. Check with the Office of Student Services before registering for courses through UW Extension.
