How to Apply

International Students

Welcome

If you are able to answer "yes" to the following four questions, you are definitely eligible to apply to graduate study at the University of Washington. We welcome and value international students here and hope that you decide that it is worth your considerable time and expense to submit an application.

  • Do you now, or will you by the time you begin your graduate studies, have the equivalent of at least a 4-year U.S. bachelor's degree? (See the section on Required Degrees from Other Countries.)
  • Have you taken or do you plan to take the required tests? (GRE, TOEFL, TSE)
  • If you have taken these tests, do your scores meet the minimum requirements?
  • If the graduate program to which you are applying does not offer any funding, do you have other sources to provide the necessary $56,151(U.S.)?

We hope that you have decided to apply to the University of Washington. If so, please continue to find out how to complete the application process.

Prior Degree Requirements

The University of Washington must assess the academic preparation of international students. The evaluation of a foreign degree is based on the following:

  1. The national system of education in the foreign country.
  2. The type of institution attended.
  3. The field of study and level of studies completed.

At the University of Washington, you must have at least a four-year degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree from institutions of recognized standing to apply for admission to this graduate school. The official assessment must be done by Graduate Admissions, but there are general guidelines that indicate the level of study expected of applicants prior to graduate enrollment at the University of Washington.

When to Apply

Due to the time required for processing, international applicants applying for Summer or Autumn Quarter should submit their application materials to the Office of Graduate Admissions prior to November 1. Applications received after this date will be processed as soon as possible, but significant delays may result.

Please read area deadlines for submitting the graduate application.

College of Education Graduate Degree Programs

These are the degree programs we offer in the College of Education:

Application Fee

The non-refundable application-processing fee is $50.00 (payable by MasterCard or Visa)for each application submitted. You must submit an application and fee for each graduate program to which you are applying, with the exception of the established Concurrent Degree programs. The fee must accompany the application and is payable by MasterCard, Visa, check or money order in United States currency to the University of Washington.

Applications will not be processed without the fee which cannot be waived or postponed.

Transcripts

In order to complete the application, two sets of transcripts from each undergraduate and graduate institution attended must be submitted. You should ask the Registrar of each institution to mail two copies of official transcripts to you in separate, sealed envelopes. DO NOT OPEN THESE ENVELOPES. If the Registrar's seal is broken or tampered with, the transcripts are no longer considered official.

International transcripts with degree statements, including the date of graduation and title of the academic degree awarded, must be in the original language and be accompanied by a certified English translation. International credentials are considered official only if they have been signed in ink by the proper school official and carry the seal of the school. In some circumstances, we will accept exact copies duly certified as such by the Registrar of a U.S. institution previously attended by the applicant. Such copies must be sent directly from the U.S. institution in a sealed envelope.

Transcripts should be collected and sent by you with the application, as directed, in the envelopes provided in the application packet.  Please make sure the contents are sent to the appropriate offices. If your prior institution will not send official transcripts to you, they may be submitted separately.
