GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH/TEACHING ASSISTANT
Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership Program
20% FTE

General Information:  The University of Washington’s Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership graduate program has partnered with Garfield High School to create a pilot program for the academic development and support of student-athletes that addresses the disconnect between academics and athletics. The Package Deal Program (PDP) will seek to create a unique learning community for high school student-athletes through basic tutoring, study skill curriculum, college preparation, and mentoring from strong academic and athletic leaders. The graduate assistant will provide mentoring and tutoring for high school student-athletes; provide support for the development and implementation of the program curriculum; and work directly with coaches, school staff, parents, and PDP tutors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

  1. Assist in the development of curriculum and delivery of seminars related to academic enrichment, athletic achievement, and college preparation for high school student-athletes, coaches, parents, and others involved with the student-athletes.
  2. Assist in the scheduling, training, and supervision of on-site tutors and academic mentors.
  3. Prepare reports and communicate with athletic coaches regarding academic status and program participation of student-athletes.
  4. Work directly with high school student-athletes providing mentoring and academic tutoring during the after school study sessions.

Requirements: 

  1. Must be registered as a full-time graduate student at the University of Washington
  2. Bachelors Degree in education or related field.
  3. Experience teaching or advising students.
  4. Experience with curriculum development.

Additional minimum requirements: 

  1. Experience working directly with student-athletes in a coaching and/or advising capacity.
  2. Knowledge of athletic options for students related to post-high school participation
  3. Knowledge of academic and career preparation and options for students interested in higher education

Desirable qualifications:  

  1. Graduate work related to student development, athletic leadership, or related field.
  2. Supervisory experience.
  3. Experience delivering workshops or seminars to a variety of audiences (i.e., students, parents, coaches).
