Internal Funding for Faculty Research

(1) The University’s Royalty Research Fund (RRF) program is funded from royalty and licensing fee income generated by the University's technology transfer program. Proposals are solicited twice a year and are due the last Monday in September and the first Monday in March; awards are announced by January 15 and June 15, respectively. The RRF welcomes proposals with budgets up to $40,000.

(2) The Institute for Ethnic Studies in the  United States (IESUS) was established in the University of Washington Graduate School to encourage research on issues pertaining to members of ethnic minority groups, particularly those living in the Pacific Northwest. The primary goals of the IESUS are (1) to support research and scholarly activities of faculty members, especially junior faculty, and (2) support the preparation of grant proposals for external funding relevant to the goals of the Institute. Proposals are accepted twice a year: November 15th and April 15th, with decisions within six weeks of submission. Typical awards range between $4500 and $7500.

(3)  The College of Education reserves a limited pool of funds (generated from the indirect costs associated with research grants) to support faculty research activities. These funds might provide seed money for pilot projects or new initiatives, and awards are smaller than those made through the RRF and IESUS.  This pool is available to faculty across the College, with a priority being the research and professional development of junior faculty, including research activities as described above, as well as professional travel, summer support, etc. Inquiries should be addressed to the Associate Dean for Research.
