Project Title: DEC Recommended Practices in Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education

COE Investigator: Susan Sandall

Collaborating Investigators: Barbara J. Smith, Mary McLean and Patricia Snyder

Funding Source: U.S. Department of Education

Start/End Dates: 1999 - Ongoing

The goal of this project was to identify evidence- and values-based practices in the field of early intervention/early childhood special education. The practices were identified through an extensive review of findings from the scientific literature. In addition, focus groups of families of children with disabilities, direct services personnel and program administrators were conducted to identify practices that were derived from values and experience. The practices were then integrated and synthesized. The next step was a field validation study in which we collected information from families, direct services personnel, administrators, and higher education personnel to determine if these practices were, indeed, recommended practices, and if the practices were used. The project is now in the dissemination and outreach phase. Print and video products have been developed. Professional development activities are being designed and implemented to assist with the translation of evidence-based practices to the field.
