Project Title: Leading a Community of Mathematics Learners

COE Investigator: Elham Kazemi

Funding Source: National Science Foundation

Start/End Dates: Ongoing

In 1999, the University of Washington and six local school districts were awarded a five-year teacher leadership grant for Expanding the Community of Mathematics Learners (ECML). ECML activities support the development of a cadre of teacher leaders that will contribute to district and school capacities to build shared principles of practice and increase student achievement. The professional development activities include sustained investigation of students’ mathematical thinking using the Developing Mathematical Ideas (DMI) curriculum materials. DMI materials offer teachers opportunities to engage in mathematics, analyze students’ mathematical thinking by interviewing their own students and reading cases of classroom instruction, analyze innovative curricula, and become familiar with pertinent research. The ECML project provides an ideal context to investigate what happens when teachers play central roles in professional development and when the vision of professional development is built on developing a community of professionals that analyze their practices together. Research questions of central interest in this research project are:

  1. What leadership roles do district mathematics leaders (DMLs) play?
  2. How do DMLs negotiate their roles both as teachers who engage in ongoing learning about mathematics instruction and as leaders who will help facilitate the learning of other teachers? How does this process change over time?
  3. How do the district contexts affect DMLs’ work with their colleagues?
