Strengthening and Sustaining Teachers (SST) was a multi-year project to develop coherent teacher support systems that would effectively integrate preservice teacher preparation, new teacher induction, and professional development through the 5th year of teaching in three mid-size U.S. urban areas. The program required the formation of partnerships among the four primary constituents of teacher training and support: a college/school of education, a college of arts and sciences, a public school district, and a teachers’ union. Creation of the SST project and ongoing support for its sites was coordinated by five nationally recognized and highly experienced educational organizations: Bank Street College of Education, the Institute for Educational Inquiry (IEI), the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future (NCTAF), the Teacher Union Reform Network (TURN), and the University of Washington.
