Updates from the Center for Innovation and Research in Graduate Education (CIRGE)

  • The Center Director, Maresi Nerad, has been appointed to join the NSF Advisory Committee for International Science and Engineering (AC\ISE) for a three-year term.   We are very excited by this prestigious national appointment.
  • CIRGE is hosting  the College’s first  visiting professor from China to the higher education program, - Shaoxue Liu , Professor and Vice Dean, Graduate School of Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China .   Professor Liu is with us for 6 months (from December2009 until May 2010 6 months.)   Her areas of expertise are the History of China and Graduate Education in China. 
  • Elizabeth Rudd, senior scientist,  was an invited lecturer at the National Science Foundation’s ADVANCE Seminar last November.  Her talk was titled What differences does a spouse's career make? Spouse "type," gender, and faculty careers.
  • Dr. Shinichi Yamamoto, Professor and Director of the National Research Institute for Higher Education, Hiroshima University, Japan visited CIRGE on January 25 and spoke at the College of Education on Japan’s experience regarding government and universities in higher education reform (videotape of his talk is available from the College media center and will be posted soon on the COE website and the CIRGE  website.)
  • Dr. Nerad was interviewed in January by a reporter from DUZ magazine (Germany’s magazine on higher education) for an article about Changes in Doctoral Education.
  • Dr. Nerad has also been invited to be a guest professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany this year.  She will be leaving, March 15, 2010  and returning September 15, 2010.
