Class of 2014 ready to make a difference

The College of Education celebrated its newest cohort of teachers and educational leaders during graduation ceremonies held June 16 outside of Miller Hall. The College's Distinguished Service Award was presented to Boeing while more than 300 members of the Class of 2014 participated in ceremonies and heard from student speaker Maurice Dolberry, an Ed.D student specializing in multicultural education, and alumnus speaker Dr. Ed Taylor, vice provost and dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs. Faculty author new book on leadership

Five current and former College of Education faculty members are co-authors of a new book exploring how education leaders can improve the quality of learning opportunities and student performance, even in the midst of challenging circumstances. Learning-Focused Leadership in Action: Improving Instruction in Schools and Districts is co-authored by the College of Education’s Michael Knapp, Meredith Honig and Margaret L. Plecki, along with former faculty Bradley Portin, director of the education program at the University of Washington Bothell, and Michael Copland, deputy superintendent of Bellingham Public Schools. Their book explores what it means for educational leadership to be "learning-focused," what this looks like in practice at both the school and district level, and how such leadership changes can be set in motion. The book draws on the professors’ extensive case study research in schools and districts that are making progress on learning improvement, with insights for education leaders at all levels.

New marketing director joins college

Dustin Wunderlich has joined the College of Education as its new director for marketing and communications. Wunderlich has more than a decade of experience in higher education marketing and communications and joins the college after serving since 2011 as director of marketing and communications for The College of Idaho. He previously held positions as senior director of public relations and director of media relations at Valparaiso University and worked as a reporter for two daily newspapers in Indiana. He is an active member of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education and his community engagement activities have included service on the boards of Luther Heights Camp in Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains and Rebuilding Together-Valparaiso.

Nicole Russell named Spencer Fellow

Nicole Russell '11 has received a prestigious National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship. The fellowships are designed to promote scholarship in the United States and abroad on matters relevant to the improvement of education in all its forms. Russell is an assistant professor of education at the University of Denver whose research interests focus on the history of mathematics education of African Americans in the 19th and 20th centuries, culturally responsive pedagogy and equity/access in mathematics classrooms.

Articles by Niedo ’14 published

Jasmin Niedo ’14 had two peer-reviewed articles published recently. “Predicting levels of reading and writing achievement in typically developing, English-speaking 2nd and 5th graders” appeared in Learning and Individual Differences and “Computerized silent reading rate and strategy instruction for fourth graders at risk in silent reading rate” appeared in Learning Disability Quarterly. Niedo’s advisor, Professor Virginia Berninger, was a co-author on both articles.

Scarlett appointed Principal Leadership Coach for Seattle schools

UW College of Education alumna Keisha Scarlett has been appointed Principal Leadership Coach for Seattle Public Schools. Scarlett, who was named Washington State 2014 Middle Level Principal of the Year in honor of her work as principal of South Shore PK-8 School since 2010, is a graduate of the college's Danforth Education Leadership Program. In her new position, Scarlett will support and guide new building leaders, directly benefiting students, families and staff across the entire district.

Bowman receives dissertation fellowship

Michael Bowman, a doctoral candidate in social and cultural foundations of education, is a recipient of a 2014 National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellowship. Bowman's research interests include the role of schools in neighborhood development and place-conscious teacher education. He is one of the developers of the “Community-Family-Politics” strand in UW's Teacher Education Program, a curricular thread that forges collaborations between urban educators and community organizers with the goal of creating more just, humane and responsive schools and neighborhoods. His dissertation is Planning School Neighborhoods in an American Cosmopolis: A Spatial Policy History of School District, Housing, and City Planning Collaborations in Seattle, 1930-1980.

Dr. Chrysan Gallucci and Tom Halverson (Faculty): Honored for teaching excellence

Dr. Gallucci, research associate professor, is the 2013-2014 recipient of University of Washington Educational Outreach’s Teaching Excellence Award in Education while Halverson, senior lecturer, was awarded the S. Sterling Munro Public Service Teaching Award. Dr. Gallucci was selected for the award based on stellar evaluations by students on course evaluations and program exit surveys. UWEO Teaching Excellence Awards are presented annually to instructors who have taught for a minimum of one year in an Extension, evening degree, distance learning, or other program administered by Educational Outreach. The S. Sterling Munro Public Service Teaching Award is given annually to a faculty member from one of UW's three campuses who has demonstrated exemplary leadership in community-based instruction, including public service internships and community partnership projects.

Haring Center auction raises $800,000

More than 450 friends of the Haring Center attended its 13th annual auction on May 17, raising over $800,000 in support of the children, families and teachers of its Experimental Education Unit. Funds raised will support its summer camp program, Project DATA (Developmentally Appropriate Treatment for Autism), and in-classroom therapy among other needs. Watch video of the auction online. Next year’s auction has been set for Saturday, May 16.

Dr. Maresi Nerad (Faculty): New book on globalization and PhD education

Globalization and Its Impacts on the Quality of PhD Education, co-edited by Dr. Nerad and sponsored by the Center for Innovation and Research in Graduate Education, is the second in the projected three-volume Forces and Forms in Doctoral Education Worldwide series. More»

James Banks (Faculty): Receives Fielding Social Justice Award

Banks, the Kerry and Linda Killinger Endowed Chair in Diversity Studies and Director of the Center for Multicultural Education, was awarded the Social Justice Award from Fielding Graduate University on May 8. The award recognizes Banks’ demonstrated concern for and commitment to the furtherance of social justice. Banks is a specialist in multicultural education and in social studies education, and his books include Teaching Strategies for Ethnic Studies; Cultural Diversity and Education: Foundations, Curriculum and Teaching; and Educating Citizens in a Multicultural Society.

Stephen Fink and Max Silverman (Faculty): CEL article published in journal

Stephen Fink and Max Silverman of the Center for Educational Leadership published a feature article on the reorganization of roles and responsibilities in the central office for the April 2014 issue of School Administrator magazine. The article, “Principals as Instructional Leaders,” illustrates the three action areas of CEL’s Principal Support Framework using the experiences of a number of school districts, including several taking part in a knowledge development project supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Leslie Herrenkohl (Faculty): Joins state learning opportunities council

Herrenkohl, professor and co-director of the 3DL Partnership, was appointed to the state’s Expanded Learning Opportunities Council to advise the governor, legislature and superintendent of public instruction regarding a comprehensive expanded learning opportunities system. The Council begins meeting in July.

CEL Introduces 5D+™ Teacher Evaluation Guide

The Center for Educational Leadership recently published the 5D+ Teacher Evaluation Guide, a resource which takes school districts through the essential elements of CEL’s 5D+ teacher evaluation process. Teachers, principals and district leaders can refer to the guide for information to help choose and implement a new teacher evaluation process. The guide also serves as a resource for gaining expertise in using inquiry and evidence to build teachers’ capacity for instructional excellence. CEL’s 5D+ teacher evaluation process has been adopted by school systems in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont and Washington. More»
