Doctoral student selected for Council for Exceptional Children program

Doctoral student Jennifer Pierce came to the University of Washington College of Education wanting to make a difference in the field of special education research. That dedication was recently recognized with Pierce’s selection to the seventh cohort of the Council for Exceptional Children’s Division for Research Doctoral Student Scholars program.

Undergrads study Norway's educational system through exchange program

Two Early Childhood and Family Studies students recently returned from an eye-opening exchange program with Queen Maud University in Trondheim, Norway that provided a first-hand look at an educational system vastly different from that of the United States.

Olivia Sullivan, who spent the fall term at Queen Maud with classmate Jessica Funk, said the opportunity to explore another country's educational system as well as Norway's mountains and valleys appealed to her sense of adventure.

After starting her career teaching middle and high school English and history, Jessica Rigby turned to research, concentrating on understanding the role of school and district leaders in the implementation of policy, classroom instruction, improving teacher practice and focus on equity. She earned her bachelor's in history from Oberlin College, a master's in education policy from Stanford University and a PhD in policy, organizations, measurement and evaluation from the University of California, Berkeley.

Large-Scale Study to Evaluate the Impact of Principal Professional Development

Beginning in 2015, a coalition of research and education institutions will launch a large-scale, randomized controlled trial evaluation of principal professional development funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences. The rigorous evaluation will provide evidence on the effectiveness of principal professional development and practical guidance to policymakers, states and school districts.

For Anne Beitlers, joining the UW College of Education as director of the Secondary Teacher Education Program is a homecoming. She is returning to Seattle after earning her PhD in English education at New York University, where she wrote her dissertation on the relationship between teachers' perceived needs of students and their practice in urban, all-male schools.

Won-Fong Johnson joined the UW College of Education in September as clinic director and assistant professor with the school psychology program. Johnson is a nationally-certified school psychologist who earned her PhD at University of California, Santa Barbara.
